So what has Cass and Kelly been up to since we last saw them? Holed up in small lake house, Cass and Kelly prepared for Lucifer Jr’s arrival. Knowing that she will never see her son, Kelly does her best to do things for him while she is still alive. That means putting together his crib and setting up his nursery. Cass, sympathetic to what she’s going through, can only offer his assurances that he will take care of her son and that he will grow up to be a good person.
At the bunker, Sam and Mary catch Dean up on the Lucifer/Crowley news. They have no idea how Lucifer could possibly be alive but they know they must stop him and even though everyone believes Crowley to be dead, Dean doesn’t think Crowley would go out that easily.
And Dean would be correct. Crowley, the master of self-preservation, is alive and well and just busted out of his grave. It doesn’t matter, however, if Crowley is alive or dead, because Sam knows they need Rowena to help them stick Lucifer back in the cage.
Unfortunately, Lucifer got to her first.
“Oh hey Sammy,” Lucifer says when he answers Rowena’s phone. Lucifer tells Sam how Rowena went out and it wasn’t a good end. Now that the only person who can lock him up ion the cage is gone, Lucifer wants to know where Cass is. Of course, Sam and Dean don’t know so Lucifer has to continue on his search.
At the lake house, Cass and Kelly come back from shopping. As they get off the truck to unload their large haul of baby diapers, Kelly doubles over from a contraction. Cass takes Kelly and leads her back into the house. What they don’t see is that Kelly left behind a glowy residue on the truck and that stream of energy has made its way to the back of the house.
Since Team Hunter can’t kill Lucifer or put him back into the cage, then they have to find Cass and keep them moving. It’s an easy enough plan, but they first have to find Cass and the only way to find him is to look for biblical signs that signal the birth of a Nephilim.
Back at the house, Cass walks outside and finds a long, thin strip of angelic energy just hanging out. Approaching it, he touches it and is transported to a dark, gloomy world. Looking around, Cass doesn’t recognize the place. Suddenly he is attacked by a demonic creature, but the beasts is shot from behind by someone. Looking up, Cass recognizes the face immediately. “You?” he asks.
Now that she has some alone time, Kelly decides to record a video message for her son, Jack. The message is short and sweet and full of a mother’s love. After she’s done she stands and feels another contraction. When she does, the stream of light outside pulsates.
At the bunker, the Winchesters are still looking for signs of Nephilim presence. Suddenly Crowley appears and Dean punches him in the face. With that over with, they can get some answers out of Crowley. He provides an explanation as to why he kept Lucifer around. He just wanted to win and to show the other demons that he was powerful enough to run Hell and maybe deter some upstarts who think they could do a better job.
With Crowley there maybe they can get Lucifer back into the cage after all. Crowley doesn’t know why they just can’t go to Rowena but after being told she’s dead, he now has to take the lead. Crowley makes a deal with them: he’ll not only help them get Lucifer back in the cage but he will seal the gates of Hell forever if they forgive him for letting Lucifer out.
Kelly searches for Cass, but he’s still in the Dark AltWorld. Struggling to stay on her feet, she calls out one more time and he appears and helps her to bed. It’s almost time.
Back at the bunker, The Winchesters continue to search for any signs of the Nephilim’s presence. Coming up with no leads, Sam comes across a news article about a massive power outage in the Pacific Northwest. Reading further he finds that the outage originated in a lake house being rented by James “Cass” Novak.
As the team gets ready to move, Dean makes sure that Crowley can’t follow them by stabbing him in the hand with his trusty knife.
With Kelly’s contractions still very far apart, Cass reassures her that she’s all right. Of course, he knows that things might not be okay once the child is born and knowing that Kelly will die when it happens, Cass is a very emotional place. Looking outside, Cass sees that the light string is still there.
As Kelly’s contractions get worse, Team Hunter speeds to the lake house as fast as possible. Kelly, in obvious pain, asks Cass to tell her about the vision he had. Cass describes the perfect future, and it calms her. They hear a car approach and Cass goes downstairs to see who’s there. Sam, Dean, and Mary enter the house and try to get Cass and Kelly out of there. Unfortunately, that can’t happen anymore. Hearing Kelly cry out, Mary goes to help her while Sam checks out the warding on the house.
Going out back, Sam sees the string of light or as Cass explains it “a rift between time and space.” So, the rip is a doorway into an alternate reality. A reality in which Earth is locked in an eternal battle between Heaven and Hell. It’s a grim place, but Cass believes that Lucifer’s son will close the rift once he’s born. Sam and Dean, their curiosity getting the better of them, touch the stream of light and are transported to the AltWorld.
Looking around, they see a figure approaching them. Pulling out their guns, Sam and Dean demand to know who it is. Cass tries to hold them off as the figure gets closer. Standing before them the man removes the mask covering his face, and the boys are surprised to see that it’s Bobby.
Even though the boys are happy to see their friend, this Bobby has no idea who they are. That’s because in the AltWorld Mary and John never got married which means Sam and Dean were never born, so there was no one to save the world from the Apocalypse.
Back at the Lakehouse, Kelly isn’t doing very well. With her contractions less than 5 minutes apart, it’s almost time for Kelly to give birth. Kelly knows that her death is close at hand, but she is okay with it. “’Cause wouldn’t you die for your sons?” Mary understands completely.
In the AltWorld, Bobby explains how he found Cass and describes the war that has been raging on. Instead of being a hunter of demons, Bobby has become an angel hunter using bullets he made from shattered angel blades (an idea that no one has ever thoughts of before). Bobby warns them that the angels in Heaven will soon get wind of the tear in space and time and will soon be there to check it out. This is Sam, Dean, and Cass’s cue to leave.
Arriving back at the house, Dean is visibly upset by the whole thing. AltWorlds, demons vs angels, the Nephilim. The only way it could get worst is if Crowley shows up. Which he does because he has impeccable timing. “I’m the answer to all your problems” he says confidently.
Cass goes to talk to Kelly, and there is clearly something wrong. Despite what it is, Cass reminds Kelly about the paradise that her son will create.
Sam, Dean, and Cass walk outside of the house where Lucifer is waiting for them. Lucifer knows that the only thing between him, his son and Apocalypse 2.0 is Team Free Will and that they are without any sort of divine backup.
“I’ll see you on the side, boys,” Dean says and Cass makes the first move. Casting him aside like a rag doll, Lucifer prepares to deal with Sam and Dean. The boys make a break for it and lead Lucifer to the spacetime rift. Lucifer watches Sam and Dean disappear through the rip and Lucifer follows suit.
Once in the AltWorld, Lucifer is confronted by Dean who is armed with Bobby’s angel-killing gun. Dean starts shooting rounds into Lucifer but they’re not having any effect. While Lucifer is distracted, Sam runs behind a hill where Crowley is waiting to cast spell that will trap Lucifer in the AltWorld.
Lucifer grabs Dean and they start to fight. The distraction gives Sam and Crowley enough time to get the spell ready. Once the spell components are together, Crowley tells Sam about one last important ingredient: a life.
Things aren’t looking good for Dean, but fortunately Crowley comes to the rescue. Lucifer, pleased to see his old “friend,” turns his attention to Crowley, allowing Sam to pull Dean away and get him to the rift. The two have a chat, and Lucifer reminds Crowley that there’s no way he can win. Crowley agrees and draws out his angel blade. Thinking that Crowley is going to fight Lucifer, it becomes the exact opposite. “Good-bye boys,” Crowley says as he stabs himself with the angel blade.
With the life taken, the spell activates causing the rift to pulsate for a second. Sam and Dean know that they have to get through the rift, but at that moment Cass appears in the AltWorld with his blade drawn. Dean tries to stop Cass from engaging Lucifer, but Sam has no choice but to pull Dean through the rift, leaving Cass alone with Lucifer.
Kelly gives one final push and her body starts to glow. “I love you,” she says as the light bursts, blowing Mary back.
Sam and Dean make it safely through rift. Seconds later Cass appears. Sam and Dean are relieved to see him, but it is short lived as he is stabbed through the chest by an angel blade. As his body drops to the ground, Lucifer stands behind him. “Well that was fun,” he says.
“Get away from them,” Mary says as she approaches Lucifer. Armed with the Enochian brass knuckles, she attacks Lucifer and starts punching him repeatedly in the face. As she knocks the snot out of him, Lucifer falls back into the rift, pulling Mary in with him. The rift closes behind them, trapping them in the AtlWorld.
Now that Mary is gone and Cass is…dead…Sam must tend to the Nephilim and Kelly. Dean falls to his knees besides Cass’s body, utterly heartbroken.
Sam goes up to the room, where he finds Kelly’s body lying there peacefully. Sam notices the footprints on the floor left behind by the Nephilim. Following them, he goes into Jack’s nursery and in the corner, the Nephilim sits there, his eyes flashing gold for a mere second.
So Mary’s in the AltWorld with Lucifer, and Rowena, Crowley and Cass are dead. What is happening?
