Previously on Supernatural: Sam and Dean saved the residents of a rural town from an active and vengeful water spirit.

On this week’s episode, the boys tackle their first demon. The Winchester’s arrive in Pennsylvania to help Jerry Panowski (Brian Markinson, who Dean and John had solved a poltergeist problem for in the past. When Jerry discovered electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) on a black box salvaged from a recent plane crash, he immediately thought of the Winchester’s.

As they speak with the survivors, Sam and Dean discover that the plane went down after one of the passengers, George Phelps (Paul Jarrett), opened the emergency door mid flight. The incident caused catastrophic damage, killing all but seven people on board. After interviewing with Phelps’ wife, they discover the man was completely ordinary. The middle aged dentist as on his way to a conference in Denver when the flight went down. How could an ordinary man open the door mid-flight, which would have had massive amounts of air pressure keeping it shut.

Sam and Dean lie their way (thanks to newly bought suits, and two faked Homeland Security IDs) into see the fuselage, and find the wreckage covered in sulfur. This is the first time there’s a connection between demons and sulfur in the narrative. This is a story point which will become very important to the series’ mythology. Their rouge works until two actual Homeland Security agents show up, exposing Sam and Dean as fakes.

The episode also sees the Winchester’s take another leap forward with their investigatons. Sam and Dean use a homemade EMF (electro magnetic field) meter which they have disguised as a walkman. The brothers also further their covert operating strategy. They use fake phone calls to gain information from the survivors, as well as to sway their investigation.

When the first pilot is killed in an small engine plane crash, Sam and Dean discover that a demon is responsible, and is hunting all the remaining survivors.

Sam and Dean find themselves trapped on a plane as the episode move towards its’ swift conclusion. They are following Amanda Walker (Jaime Ray Newman), who is the flight attendant on the flight. She’s working her first shift after surviving the first crash. To make matters worse, the Winchester’s have 40 minutes to not only find the demon, but to exorcise it.

The final action sequence is claustrophobic. Trapped on the plane with little freedom to search, Sam and Dean can’t tell who may have been possessed. In order to run a quiet investigation, they reach deep into their bag of tricks. Their secretive EMF meter and muttered Latin phrases (“Christo!”) are all they can use without causing suspicion.

As the brothers perform the exorcism on the possessed co-pilot, the demon mentions the still recent death of Sam’s girlfriend. This dramatic reveal builds towards plots which will grow in importance as season 1 ends. There’s much more to come for the Winchesters.
