Chuck shows Sam the future on Supernatural

Things are getting a little desperate on Supernatural.  In “The Trap” Chuck (Rob Benedict) shows Sam (Jared Padalecki) what life is like without God.

THEN

Before the winter break, the Winchesters found a way to stop God/Chuck once and for all.  Then God pulled a fast one on Sam and Eileen (Shoshannah Stern).  What is he up to?

Also, the Archangel Michael returned in the form of Sam and Dean’s (Jensen Ackles)  half brother Adam (Jake Abel). Castiel (Misha Collins) convinced Michael that God is evil. So Michael shared a spell that will trap God, the same way he trapped Amara (Emily Swallow), his sister. The only problem is, one of the ingredients is in Purgatory.  Michael opened the door to Purgatory, but they are limited on the amount of time they have to find the ingredients.

NOW

Chuck has Sam and Eileen at a casino in Nebraska.  He reveals two things. 1. He put the spell to bring Eileen back to life in Rowena’s book.  Chuck is using Eileen to keep an eye on Sam And 2. Chuck figured out he is connected to Sam through their shared shoulder injury.  That connection is the reason he can’t leave Earth. God is trapped on Earth and it’s all Sam Winchester’s fault. So Chuck is going to cut that connection and that’s why he kidnapped Sam.

Meanwhile at the bunker, Castiel and Dean are waiting for Sam to return to go into Purgatory. One of the ingredients in Michael’s spell is a Leviathan blossom that only grows in Purgatory.  Dean tries calling both Sam and Eileen and gets no answer.

While Chuck attempts to cut into Sam, Eileen is able to grab her phone and call Dean. Dean can hear Chuck talking.  Chuck realizes what Eileen has done and takes the phone away. He says hello and goodbye to Dean before throwing the phone across the room.

Dean is ready to rush in and save Sam, but Cas reminds him that they don’t have much time to find the blossom and return to the land of the living.  He says Chuck won’t kill Sam because that’s not the ending he envisioned. Besides, they don’t have a powerful enough weapon to fight Chuck right now. That’s why they have to go to Purgatory to save Sam and the World.

CUTTING THE CORD

Chuck is taking his time with the knife and Sam realizes he’s stalling.  That might have something to do with never having to do the dirty work. And he’s right, so Chuck makes Eileen do it for him while watches and plays the guitar. Sam is bleeding pretty bad.  He tells Chuck that he will bleed out and die before he cuts out the connection from his shoulder.

Chuck makes Eileen stop cutting and heals Sam’s shoulder.  He doesn’t understand why he can’t cut the connection though.  It’s frustrating until he realizes Sam still has hope. That’s why he’s so defiant. Sam thinks the Winchesters can beat God.

Chuck says Sam’s Hope is misplaced.  They can win, but they don’t want to.  Chuck has seen what happens if the Winchesters win. And he wants to show Sam what that looks like.

Cas and Dean make their way through the woods in Purgatory, unsure of what they are looking for, and they’re not alone.  It gets darker and Dean thinks they are going in circles. They find corpses, but Dean thinks its the same one. While he’s examining the corpse, a leviathan sneaks up on him.  Cas jumps out and throws the leviathan backwards before he can attack Dean.

They were pretending, trying to make the supernatural being show himself.  It’s a leviathan monster. They tell him that they are looking for a flower. Dean threatens the leviathan into helping them find it.  The leviathan tells him that the flower is a blossom that grows from the soil when a leviathan dies, but the body has to rot for months before you can see the blossom. It has ten husks and a bloody red center.

Dean asks the leviathan if he knows Benny.  The leviathan doesn’t know Bennie, but he knows about him.  He says Bennie’s kind didn’t trust him so they killed him and ripped him apart.

WITHOUT GOD

The world without God looks pretty much the same as it does now.  One night Sam gets a call from Jody (Kim Rhodes). She tells him about how she and Claire raided a small nest of vampires. Turns out the nest was much larger than they thought. Now Claire (Kathryn Newton) is dead.

Chuck pulls Sam out of the vision and gives him a watch.   He tells Sam to set it to any day and time to find out what happens.

Sam goes to January 6, 2021. Sam and Dean are driving home after a fight with werewolves. They lost a lot of people in that battle.  Cas is no longer with them. Dean says the monsters are winning.

Next, Sam watches himself prepare to return to the vampire nest. Dean stops him, saying they need to stand down.  The Mark made Castiel go crazy and Dean buried him in a Malek box. Dean says they don’t even save people anymore. Most of their friends are dead.  Sam reminds him that Bobby and Jody are still fighting. Dean says they both have a death wish. And after what happened to Eileen, Sam has a deathwish too. They lost. It’s over for Dean.

OUT OF CHARACTER

Sam realizes what Chuck is trying to do. He wants to break down Sam so he loses hope.  Dean would never give up, no matter how bad things get. Chuck says it’s the truth and what comes next for the Winchesters.

Sam sees Dean drinking in the kitchen. Future Sam walks in and says he’s raiding the next with or without Dean.  Dean takes one last drink and gets up to go with Sam. Chuck watches them leave, saying they made a bad decision. Sam fast forwards the watch and it stops.  Chuck says that’s as far as it goes for them. It stops on December 9, 2022.

THE TRAP

Dean and Castiel talk about Bennie and follow the leviathan to the blossom. Cas admits it was his fault that the leviathans got out and he feels guilty for it…among other things. Dean thinks he’s talking about Mary, but Cas is actually talking about Jack.  Cas moved on from Mary. He apologized, but Dean refused to hear him. That’s part of the reason he left. Dean couldn’t forgive him because he didn’t want to. Dean couldn’t move on because he was too angry.

The leviathan stops near a blossom. Cas gets trapped in an angel trap.  The leviathan says Eve has some beef with Cas. He killed her alphas and swallowed her leviathan.  Another leviathan shows up and attack Dean. Dean easily disposes of him, but guide hits Dean and knocks him out. When Dean wakes up, Cas is gone and the blossoms are burnt.

They are running out of time and Dean doesn’t know where Cas is. Dean starts praying to Cas, saying he’s sorry for how he’s been acting.  It was easier to let Cas go than to admit he was wrong. Dean starts crying, hoping that Cas can hear him. He doesn’t know why he gets so angry. It’s always been there and he can’t stop it.  But he forgives Cas and apologizes for not being able to say that.

Dean finds Cas at the breach with two minutes left to spare.  He hugs his friend and asks what happened. Cas let the leviathan take him until he found a leviathan blossom. Then he fought his way out and ran to the breach. Dean wants to tell Cas he forgives him, but Cas heard his prayer.

DECEMBER 9, 2022
Sam and Dean's future looks bleak on Supernatural

The Supernatural vision continues. Sam and Dean are in a room and blocking the door.  ‘They’ are coming for the Winchesters, but the brothers won’t go down without a fight.  It’s Bobby (Jim Beaver) and Jody that hunting the Winchesters because they are vampires.

The hunters break down the door and a fight starts.  The brothers take care of the hunters easily. Jody runs in and shoots Sam.  As he falls to the floor, Dean grabs Jody and bites her, killing her instantly.  Bobby runs in and cut off Sam’s head.

Sam wakes up at the casino.  Chuck is sure this is the future for the Winchesters and it hurts him because Sam and Dean mean so much to him. He says he wants a better ending for them.  Sam doesn’t buy it. He saw Chuck’s supernatural visions on how to end the Winchesters and it didn’t look better than being a monster.

Sam tries to convince himself that they can beat Chuck and Sam can make things better.  Chuck assures him that he can’t. He tells Sam to look past his own story and see what happens.  The monsters rule because Chuck isn’t there. Everyone Sam loves will die. Chuck asks Sam if he can live with that.

CONFRONTATION

Dean and Cas put Michael’s spell together. Cas takes the Mark since Dean has already taken it once.  The spell is in a small orb that will have to be thrown at Chuck to work. Dean and Cas go to the casino and see that Sam is still there.  Dean starts to cut Sam’s bond when Eileen attacks him. Cas tackles her and holds her down, but Chuck shows up. Dean punches Chuck, because he had to. It’s okay. Chuck has a hard punch of his own.  Cas tosses the spell orb to Sam, telling him to smash it. Sam hesitates as Dean and Cas yell at him to destroy the orb. Sam falls to his knees and lets of the orb. It rolls to Chuck’s feet. Sam says he can’t do it.

Sam loses hope, releasing Chuck from the connection between them.  Chuck picks up the ball and crushes it. Dean asks what’s next. He knows Chuck won’t kill them because Sam saw all the ideas that Chuck had about killing them.  Chuck says those weren’t visions, those were memories of other Winchesters on other Earths. Those Sams and Deans didn’t think they could kill each other, but they did.  Chuck says this Sam and Dean will give in too. Dean says No! They won’t do his bidding. Dean tells Chuck to play with his toys on Earth-2. They will never give him what he wants.  Chuck says they will see and disappears.

THE NEXT MOVE

Back at the bunker, Eileen tells Sam that she has to go. She’s not sure what’s real anymore.  Sam kisses her to let her know his feelings are real. After she leaves, he joins Cas and Dean in the kitchen.  Sam apologizes for ruining their chance to stop Chuck. He truly believes what Chuck showed him will happen. Dean can accept that. For now, Chuck is gone, but he’ll be back. They can’t kill him or trap him though.  Dean says they will find another way.

ELSEWHERE

Jack (Alexander Calvert) is still in the Empty, but he’s not alone.  Billie (Lisa Berry), aka Death shows up to let Jack know …it’s time.

THOUGHTS

I’m so happy Supernatural is back.  And all I have to say is, it’s about time!  It’s about time that 1) Sam kissed Eileen, 2) that Cas and Dean made up, and 3) that we finally see Jack!
