Rowena prepares a last ditch spell on Supernatural

Team Winchester has been battling spirits on Supernatural. In “The Rupture” the team uses every bit of magic they have to win this war with Chuck’s (Rob Benedict) ghosts.

Then

If you haven’t heard, God is mad at the Winchesters and Castiel (Misha Collins).  He killed Jack (Alexander Calvert) and opened up the gates of Hell. A demon named Belphagor (Calvert) arrived, inhabited Jack’s body and offered to help Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) put Hell back together because…well, he likes torturing souls.  With help from Rowena (Ruth Connell), they should be successful, right?  Arthur Ketch (David Haydn-Jones) came to help too, but he got pretty banged up last week and is currently in the hospital.

More spirits are released from Hell.  Team Winchester and Belphagor go to the cemetery to patch up the hole to Hell.  Rowena has a spell that could work, but she needs a well protected space to work. They go back to the crypt to work.  The spell appears to be working, but something pushes Rowena back. She says everyone is going to die.

Rowena explains that she could feel the wall collapsing because of the spirits.  She could also feel their rage. She says they are wild and desperate and angry.  They are too strong and there’s no magic in the world to stop it. They have maybe hours to prepare to fight.  The fight is over.

Belphagor leaves without saying a word and Cas goes after him.  Belphagor isn’t angry or anything.  He’s looking for something.  He shows Cas an opening in the ground where the spirits are leaving Hell.  Why was Belphagor looking for it?  Belphagor doesn’t say.  Cas asks again and Belphagor says he has an idea but no one is going to like it.

Rowena is distraught and needs a moment alone.  Dean starts getting ready to fight. Sam doesn’t understand why. Dean says he’s mad. The ghost-pocalypse can’t be Chuck’s ending. Dean isn’t going to let some glorified fanboy have the last word after everything he’s put them through. Sam sees Rowena looking through a spell book. She’s not finding anything that will help though.

THE RUPTURE

Belphagor’s idea is to retrieve Lilith’s crook from her chamber and use it to call back the spirits to Hell.  That’s it’s soul purpose, but Lilith never had to use it.  The crook is in Lilith’s chamber. Now that the doors of Hell are open, they can get to it easily.

While Belphagor will retrieve the crook, Rowena will cast a spell to close the rupture in the ground. It’s not from any of her books though. She created it herself. And she only needs a few things.  lavender, myrth and the skull of an owl. Nothing too exotic.  Oh and she needs an assistant and calls dibs on Sam.  That leaves Dean to sit by the rupture and wait to throw in a bomb to close it. And Cas will go with Belphagor as prtoection…courtesy of Dean.

KETCH HIM IF YOU CAN

Ketch wakes up, a bit confused, but ready to go back to the fight.  He disconnects himself from all sorts of machines and prepares to leave. The nurst tries to stop him and gets back up when a doctor arrives.  The doctor kills the nurse revealing that she’s actually the demon Ardat (Sharon Taylor).  Ardat sent Ketch to kill Belphagor. She knows he found the demon and he’s protecting him.  Ardat pulls out his heart, killing the British Man of Letters.  R. I. P. Arthur Ketch.

Another hunter arrives at the graveyard with Rowena’s ingredients, including the owl’s skull.  R. I. P. Hedwig. The hunter says the people are restless but safe. The spirits are still working at breaking through the wall.

Dean gets a text from Ketch, who’s ready to get back in the game, so Dean tells him where they are. It’s obviously not Ketch, but Ardat, still looking for Belphagor.

A DEMON’S PLAN

Cas and Belphagor make their way through the rupture…Cas pushed the demon in. Once inside, Cas begins to wonder why the demon needs protection if Hell is empty.  Belphagor says he just wanted Cas’s company so they could become better friends.

Belphagor says he’s starting to feel like one of the guys. He thinks he’s growing on Sam and Dean…like a cancer. (ha!) Cas says they are using Belphagor and they don’t care about him.   Belphagor asks Cas why he doesn’t like him. Cas say she’s wearing Jack’s body. Jack was like a son to Cas.  Belphagor is an abomination. End of discussion.

They go inside the chamber and find another demon rummaging through Lillith’s stuff. Cas asks if he has the horn and he doesn’t.  So Cas kills the demon. Belphagor knows exactly where the horn is, but it’s locked in a box line with writing. Enokian, a dead language only known to the oldest of angels and demons.  The writing is an incantation to open the box in the form of a song praising Lucifer. Cas can read it, but it only works if he sings it.

THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER

While Cas sings the incantation, Dean sets up by the rupture with his witch bomb, waiting for ketch.  Sam worries about Dean out there with no protection. Rowena tells him to focus on the task at hand.

When Cas finishes his song, the box opens and Cas pulls out the crook.  Belphagor warns him that the rupture will close quickly so he should go.  Cas starts to hand the crook to Belphagor but something pushes him down.  It’s Ardat and she’s there to stop Belphagor from claiming the throne of Hell.

Cas helps Belphagor fight off Ardat.  Ardat claims that Belphagor wants to rule Hell. With Lillith’s crook, he could do that easily. Belphagor comes up behind Ardat and stabs her with an angel blade.

It turns out that Ardat was right.  Belphagor wanted the crook because it absorbs souls.  With the power of the souls, Belphagor would become unstoppable.  It was his plan all along.  Use the Winchesters to get to the crook and take over.

CALLING ALL SPIRITS

Belphagor pushes Cas out of the chamber and blows on the crook.  The spirits turn around and start pouring into the horn.  Sam and Rowena begin their spell to close the rupture. Dean sees the witch bomb light up and throws it into the rupture.  When it blows, the ground starts closing up.

Cas slowly makes his way toward Belphagor, stopping him from absorbing the souls and breaking the crook.   He punches Belphagor in the face over and over until Jack tells him to stop. Cas doesn’t believe it and he smites Belphagor away, burning Jack’s body.

ROWENA’S LAST STAND

Belphagor’s plan almost works.  Rowena knew it wouldn’t though.  She cuts out her last resurrection sachet.  She says magic can contain anything at a price. This spell only requires two ingredients.  Rowena’s blood and her final breath. She will absorb the spirits from Hell.  Once her body breaks down, the souls will be released where they belong.

Sam doesn’t like plan, but Rowena says its the only option.  And Sam has to be the one to kill Rowena.  It’s in Death’s books. Sam is the one to give Rowena her permanent death.

Cas returns to the surface and informs Dean that the crook is destroyed and he killed Belphegor. Dean isn’t very happy to hear any of this.  He says it was their only shot.

FINAL SPELL

Sam refuses to take Rowena’s life.   Rowena says she can’t do it herself.  She doesn’t believe in anything enough to take her own life. But she does believe in prophecy and magic.  She puts a knife in Sam’s hand, pulling him toward her. She says it has to be this way.

Sam points the knife at Rowena’s abdomen.  She says they’ve grown fond of each other, but will he let Dean and the world die so she can live?  Sam looks at Rowena, kinda smiles and says, `No.’ He hugs her, pushing the knife into her stomach. She pulls the knife out and walks to the graveyard.

The souls start entering Rowena as she walks to the rupture.  Cas and Dean see her and Sam headed toward them. She has absorbed the last of the souls on Earth. She takes one last look at the guys and says goodbye.  Rowena jumps into the rupture and the ground closes up. R. I. P. Rowena. You were exquisite.

ANGER AND SADNESS

The boys go back to the bunker.  Sam is very sad about Rowena. The town is safe, but they also lost Ketch.  Dean says it’s over. They beat God’s apocalypse. What Sam did…he didn’t have a choice.  Sam knows, but he’s still very upset about it.

Cas arrives, inquiring about Sam.  Dean isn’t too warm with him. He asks Cas why he didn’t stick to the plan. Cas tells him about Belphagor’s plan. Dean thinks they could have figured it out afterwards, with Rowena.  Cas thinks there was something wrong with the plan, because it always goes wrong. Dean says Cas is always that thing that goes wrong.

Cas realizes that he’s not welcome anymore.  Dean doesn’t trust him and won’t talk to him anymoe.  Even his powers are fading.  Dean blames Cas for Mary’s (Samantha Smith) death. So Cas is leaving. It’s time to move on.

THOUGHTS

Now that the ghost apocalyps is over on Supernatural, we can now move toward the final Winchester cases.  There is still the matter as to how Sam’s gunshot is connected to Chuck’s wound.  Where is Chuck? Will we get to see Jack again?  And who else from the Winchesters’ past will show up to help the boys?  I’m ready  for these new adventures. Let’s Go!
