NOW
The evil spirits trapped in Harlan are trying to find a way out. The residents of Harlan are trying to find a way back in. The only thing keeping them from doing so are the Winchesters. They put out a call to the hunters in the area to help protect the residents. It’s not enough to convince the residents though, especially when they’ve got men with guns patroling the perimeter around the high school.
Belphegor can see the spirits and tells Dean these are the worst of the worst. Frances Tumblety, Jack the Ripper (Lane Davies) shows up and is ready to leave his prison. He overhears their conversation and reports back to the other spirits. Hunters are keeping them captive and they are working with Belphegor. It’s time the spirits worked together to find a way out.
A couple of residents sneak into the neighborhoods and are immediately possessed. Rowena (Ruth Connell) shows up at the same time ready to help where she can. Sam asks her to create a supernatural device that uses souls as power. Basically vaccuum up the souls and trap them in a bomb. Before Rowena and Sam can really get into an disagreement about his plan, they are informed about the possessed residents.
Dean and Belphegor meet Sam, Rowena and Cas at the border. Tumblety shows up and demands they remove the ward. His evil compandres begin torturing the residents to the point where they are on their knees. Arthur Ketch (David Haydn-Jones) shows with a nifty gun that disperses iron flakes in the air. It gets rid of the spirit without hurting the victim. And he stole it from the British Men of Letters.
KETCHING UP
The guys and Rowena return to the school and share a beer. Rowena doesn’t like beer and asks for scotch. Ketch formally introduces himself. They’ve met before, but Rowena was being tortured at the time. Ketch is the one who let her go. And now there’s a weird attraction between the two that’s kind of creepy.
Dean is telling Ketch about their plan when Belphegor says it’s too quiet. The spirits are up to something. Ketch thinks he’s Jack, but Dean lets him know that God killed Jack. Belphegor introduces himself and Ketch is shocked that he’s helping humans. He admits that he was looking for Belphegor. Another demon, Ardat hired Ketch to find and kill Belphegor. Sam asks Ketch not to kill him because they need him…for now.
Rowena gives Dean a list of ingredients that she needs for the soul vaccuum. She takes the opportunity to ask him about Ketch. Dean reminds her that they are in the middle of a crisis. And Ketch is not the type of guy she wants to get involved with…or is he?
TO BE OR NOT TO BE
Cas tries to have a heart to heart with Dean. you know how Dean feels about heart to hearts. Cas continues anyway. He feels bad about not telling him about Jack and losing Mary. Dean is still angry at Cas, but he mostly angry at Chuck. He says nothing about their lives is real because they did everything Chuck made them do. They are who they are because of Chuck. And Dean won’t ignore that they have never lived their own lives. Dean asks how Cas feels about God lying to him for his entire existence.
Cas is angry too, mainly because Chuck killed Jack, but it’s life, whether they knew Chuck was pulling the strings or not. Life is an obstacle course for everyone, there’s nothing supernatural about it. Chuck knew the truth and chose to keep it to himself. So what is real about this life? They are real.
Dean goes on patrol with Ketch and gives him an iron chain to avoid being possessed. It doesn’t really go with Ketch’s British style, but he puts it on anyway. As Ketch understands, God is the real enemy here. He’s never really looked for God because he was more of a rumor than fact. Ketch would rather talk about Rowena.
Dean gets an alert that two hunters haven’t checked in. They go looking for the hunters and encounter Lizzy Borden. Lizzy beats them up a bit before pulling out her ax to kill them. Someone in the shadows with a strong voice stops her from killing Dean. The person steps out of the shadows to reveal Kevin Tran (Osric Chau)
THE PROPHET
It turns out that the prophet was sent to Hell instead of Heaven. Dean is pretty sure Chuck sent him there on purpose. Kevin says the ward is fading. He’s pretty sure the other spirits can feel it. Dean asks him to infiltrate the others and find out their plans. Since God cast Kevin to Hell, he’s gotten a bad boy rep.
Sam expresses his concern about Kevin’s mission when Belphegor shows up. They tell him the warding is fading. Belphegor said it would. He thought the Winchesters would have wrapped things up quickly. Dean asks him to charege up the warding again but it’s a one time thing. Sam mentions Kevin and Belphegor knows him. He calls Kevin a whiney millenial. Dean tells him about sending Kevin back to Heaven after this is over. Belphegor says they can’t. Once a soul is cast out of Heaven, theycan never go back. Unless God really likes someone. Without God around, Kevin can’t go back.
A LITTLE R & R
Chuck tracks down his sister Amara (Emily Swallow) in Reno. Amara is skeptical of Chuck’s visit. He says he’s on hiatus from being God and wants to spend more time with his sister. He suggests they take a trip to another dimension and start a new planet. Amara is happy where she is.
Amara takes a closer look and discovers that Chuck needs her. She touches his shoulder and he flinches. Chuck was shot with the energy gun too. He’s not complete and not at full strength. And that scares Chuck.
Chuck takes a look at his injury and touches it. Sam feels the same pain because the wound is in the same place on his shoulder. Dean asks if he’s okay and Sam says it’s getting better.
RAISING HELL
The spirits want to wait for the warding to fade. Tumblety doesn’t want to wait. He wants them to combine their strength and make the warding weak enough to escape. There’s just one problem. The hunters have to know the warding is weakening and will be ready to send them all back.
Kevin appears. Tumblety knows about his association with the Winchesters. Kevin tries to deny it, but none of the spirits believe him. Kevin tries to leave, but the others won’t let him.
Rowena and Ketch work on the vaccuum and flirt while working. Ketch offers a shortcut in Rowena’s spell. He sparks an electrical charge into the concoction, moving her forward two steps. The situation makes them both excited. The perfect time for Dean to call and ask for the vaccuum. Rowena has to go.
On the way, she is stopped by Tumblety. Apparently they dated many years ago…and he cheated on her. SMH. He asks about what she’s carrying, but she remains quiet. It’s not a big deal. Tumblety is there to send a message. They have Kevin. They want Sam and Dean to come get him. Ketch shows up with his flake gun and Rowena runs to Sam and Dean. When Ketch shoots at Tumblety, the spirit disappears. He reappears behind Ketch and hits him over the head.
SOUL CATCHER
Rowena makes it to the boys and tells them about Kevin. Dean calls the vaccuum the Soul Catcher. Rowena has it, but Dean rushed her so she’s not sure if it works. There’s only one way to find out.
Sam and Dean go to the Ghost HQ. Tumblety tells them to shut down the warding or he will devour Kevin. The Winchesters refuse and Tumblety reaches into Kevin’s soul to drain it. Rowena and Ketch come in the back door and she catches a few ghosts. The others disappear. Kevin says they have a backup plan. They are going to attack the weakest point in the warding until they can get through.
Everyone convenes at that point. Ketch arrives and they set Rowena on the spirits. She vaccuums up a lot of souls before Ketch knocks her down, taking the device. He has been possessed by Tumblety. He is going to use the Soul Catcher to blow open the warding. Dean shoots Ketch with a real gun, releasing Tumblety. Rowena picks up the Soul Catcher and completes the mission.
LIFE ON EARTH
Afterward, Ketch is sent to the hospital in an ambulance. Cas tried to heal him, but couldn’t. What? Sam says it’s because he’s tired. But…he’s an angel. Do angels get tired?
Dean apologies to Ketch for shooting him with iron bullets, but Ketch knows Dean has always wanted to shoot him. He’s killed him once, so… Rowena stands nearby and watches him get carted away in the ambluance.
Kevin decides he wants to leave. He knows that he can’t go back to Heaven. So he’s just going to be a ghost and roam the Earth. His only other option is to go back to Hell. First he needs Belphegor to let him out. The Winchesters apologize, but there is no way to make it right. Kevin is okay. He says something you just have to accept it. Belphegor opens a small breach in the warding and Kevin disappears.
ALONE AND AFRAID
Back in Reno, Amara prepares to leave and Chuck is ready to go. She decided to go alone. Chuck gets angry saying he’s in charge, but Amara knows better. Chuck just isn’t Chuck anymore. Amara figured out that he can’t leave Earth without her help. And she won’t help him. One time he sealed her away. Now she’s doing the same to him, abandoning him on Earth. He’s alone, just like he always wanted.
Cas and Rowena are looking in the sky at something. The Winchesters and Blephegor look up and see more spirits descending on them. They have to find another way to stop them. But how?
