Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) check out a pawn shop looking for a special item. The shop owner has a secret room of rare supernatural artifacts in the back of the shop.  The boys tell him they are looking for something specific because it was stolen from the person who hired them. The shop owner attacks them with Dragon’s breath.  He is able to knock Sam down and hold him with a special sword. Dean shoots him in the back to stop him from killing Sam.

Sam checks out the inventory of the secret room and the guys decide to take some of the items. They head back to Lebanon and stop at the liquor store before heading home. Dean is on a first name basis at the liquor store owner and orders “the usual.” Sam continues to go through the inventory and finds a description of a pearl that grants the heart’s desire.  Dean thinks they can use it to get Michael out of his head.

No! Not Baby

Outside is a group of teenagers sitting next to Baby. A girl decides to steal Baby and everything in it.  Sam and Dean are in the liquor store and barely see her drive away.  She’s too far for them to catch her, but one of her friends is still standing across the street. Dean and Sam ask the boy who she was and where’s she’s going. The kid is scared of the Winchesters.  He’s seen them before and told his friends about them. He tells them that the girl was going to a party at an abandoned house at the end of town.

The guys get to the house and see a kid is running from the house, claiming he saw the ghost of a killer clown.  The Winchesters break out their FBI badges and the kids clear out of the house. The see a box that belonged to John Wayne Gacy.  The killer clown is Gacy and he appears in the room to attack the Winchesters. The kids run back in the house just in time to see Sam burn Gacy’s box and the ghost disappear.  The guys have to explain that they are monster hunters and the kids can’t tell anyone about what they saw.

The guys head back to the bunker with the supernatural items.  Sam finds the pearl that will grant the holder their heart’s desire.  Dean takes the pearl and thinks about getting rid of Michael. The lights go out and someone attacks them in the dark. They hear a shotgun and the intruder tells them not to move. When the lights come back on, John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is standing above them and he’s so confused.

John thinks it’s 2003 and Sam should be in college.  The boys tell him it’s 2019 and catch him up on what’s been happening in their lives.  They even tell him about how he died. He’s proud that he went down killing ‘yellow eyes’ Azazel, defending their mom. Speaking of Mary (Samantha Smith), she calls for the boys, announcing her arrival at the bunker. The minute John and Mary’s eyes meet, they embrace in a kiss, as if no time has passed between them.

Sam loves that John is there, but he’s worried about the consequences of time travel.  Dean doesn’t care. He has his dad and his mom and all is good with the world. Sam finds John in the library and they talk about their strained relationship.  John apologizes for not being the father that Sam needed. And Sam apologizes for hating him. (I’m dying!)

Sam Loves Kale

Mary plans to make the Winchester Surprise for dinner and gives Dean a grocery list.  Sam finds Dean to tell him he was right about not worrying. They go to town together and find things are a little different.  Dean’s friend at the liquor store has no idea who he is. Sam tries to say hi to other town folk and they give him strange looks.  He goes to the post office and sees a Wanted poster with Dean’s picture on it.

Sam runs to tell Dean about the poster, but Dean already knows.  He also found Sam’s online profile. He’s a lawyer who likes kale.  There’s even a video of Sam giving a TED talk. The timeline adjusted with John’s arrival.  If they don’t fix it, they become the other versions of themselves. So what else changed?

The Real Castiel

Zachariah (Kurt Fuller) is alive for starters.  He and Castiel (Misha Collins) arrive in town trying to find out who’s messing with the timeline. They go into a restaurant and start asking questions.  No one can answer their questions and they give Zachariah funny looks. Castiel is basically a hitman for Heaven and threatens to kill everyone if they don’t start talking.  Sam and Dean see Castiel’s light coming from the restaurant and go in to investigate.

They are surprised to see Zachariah and try to talk to Castiel, but he doesn’t know.  Zachariah kind of remembers the Winchesters. He says Heaven had great expectations of them when their dad disappeared but then he came back. He tells Castiel to kill them.  The angels and the Winchesters fight. Zachariah tries to torture Sam into telling him what they did. Sam stabs Zachariah with an angel blade then goes after Castiel.  Castiel has Dean up against a wall. When Sam attacks, Castiel throws him across the room.  Sam coughs up a lot of blood. Castiel turns his attention back to Dean. While he’s distracted, Sam is able to draw a sigil with is blood to cast out Castiel, saving Dean.

Family Dinner

At the bunker, Dean tells John about the changes in the timeline.  If John doesn’t go back, Sam never becomes a hunter and Mary is never resurrected.  John is okay with that because he thinks the boys are better off with their Mom. Sam is telling Mary at the same time.  They have to destroy the pearl to send John back to 2003. John tells Dean that he never meant for Dean to become a hunter. He’s proud of Dean, but he wanted him to be happy and have a family.  Dean says he has a family.

The Winchesters sit in silence at the dinner table.  Everyone is upset by the news that John has to leave.  John finally speaks up, telling everyone that they have two choices.  Sit and think about what’s coming. Or be grateful for the time they have together.  Everyone’s spirits are lifted and they have a nice family dinner.

After dinner, Sam asks Dean if John will go back to being who he was before.  He wonders how things would change if he remembered his time in the future.  Dean thinks that’s a nice dream, and he would like to send John back even further in time to stop John from becoming a hunter and letting someone else save the world.  But what do they become? He doesn’t know who that Dean Winchester would be.  Dean likes who they are and he doesn’t want to change a thing.

Is This Really Goodbye?

The family gathers in the library. Mary holds John’s hand.  He tells Mary that he has missed her so much. Then he tells the boys to take care of each other. He says he is so proud of them and loves them very much. They get one last hug before Sam destroys the pearl. John takes one last look at the boys and then Mary. He smiles and disappears.

The town of Lebanon returns to normal.  Castiel walks in the bunker. By the looks on the Winchesters’ faces, he can tell that something big has happened.  And back in 2003, John Winchester wakes up in Baby parked by a lake. Dean calls asking if he’s okay. John says he had one hell of a dream but it was a good dream.

Thoughts

Oh, the EMOTIONS!  I’ve always wanted to see all four Winchesters in one episode.  It’s been a long time coming and #300 did not disappoint.  Every now and then, the boys get to have a little bit of normalcy in their lives.  I’m glad they left the door open for JDM to return again.  Maybe one day they will all get to be together for good.

Congrats Supernatural on 300 episodes. Carry on.
