Supernatural has a bunker full of new hunters this season. Sam (Jared Padalecki) has been teaching them how to do research and protect themselves. The main question is, when will they be ready? And is Dean (Jensen Ackles) ready? That’s an even better question!
Newbie Maggie (Katherine Evans), from the apocalypse world goes on her first solo hunt in Claremore, Oklahoma. She is wearing a body cam and turns it on before entering a crypt. She runs into some trouble when she is attacked by a ghoul.
At the bunker, Dean finds Sam addressing the new hunters. He makes fun of him and his camp counselor style of leadership. He also points out that Sam looks tired, but Sam says he’s okay. Sam’s phone dings indicating the hunter check ins. There is one hunter that hasn’t checked in, Maggie. Sam goes to check her status on the computer. When they see the footage of the ghoul attack, Sam and Dean leave for Oklahoma.
They get to the crypt and find drag marks, but no blood. Maggie could still be alive. The grounds keeper finds them, so they pose as representatives from the national historical society and ask to speak to the owners. The grounds keeper takes them to the main house, where they find two other reps from the society have already arrived. Bobby (Jim Beaver) and Mary (Samantha Smith) are already talking to Neil (Chris-Patrick Simpson), the caretaker of the owner, Mr. Rawling.
Mary tells Sam that Maggie was nervous about her first solo hunt. She had been texting Mary and Bobby for pointers. They decided to go to Claremore to check on Maggie. At the same time, Dean and Bobby meet Mr. Rawling, who is in a coma. Mr. Rawling looks exactly like the ghoul from Maggie’s footage. Sasha (Leah Cairns), Rawling’s daughter shows up. She’s agitated and kicks everyone out.
The team discuss their situation and how to find Maggie. Bobby is mad that Sam sent Maggie out in the field when she wasn’t ready. Mary splits up the group and goes with Sam to look around the grounds. She says Bobby is bothered by something, but he won’t talk about it. Sam encourages Mary to talk to Bobby. Mary finds a jacket with a bunch of IDs, like a hunter would carry..
Dean and Bobby walk around together and find a shed. When they check out the shed, Bobby sees a guy walking by. Dean goes into the shed and finds a body. He turns around to show Bobby and the ghoul jumps out at him. Dean stabs it and the ghoul disappears.
In the house, Sasha hears something rattling around upstairs. She goes to investigate and thinks its Neil. A door opens and she goes in. A vampire jumps out at her and growls. She runs, but falls. When she looks back, it’s gone.
The team returns to the house and console Sasha. They admit to being hunters. Dean arrives and tells them about the dead body in the shed. Sam shows him the IDs and its the same guy. Dean left Bobby outside so Mary goes to check on him. She can’t find him, so she calls out and walks around searching for Bobby.
Sam tells Dean about the vampire that scared Sasha. Dean tells him about the ghoul attack in the shed. They start brainstorming about what’s going on. It’s weird that a vampire would let it’s prey get away. They think something is just trying to scare people away, and killing hunters. Sam goes to the attic to check things out. Dean stays with Sasha. Sasha tells Dean about her family. She holds some resentment towards her father. Dean tells her to let it go. It’s the past and there’s nothing she can do about it. He tries to let go of his past everyday.
Sam enters the attic where Sasha found the vampire. He finds Maggie chained up and hooked up to needles that are draining her blood. She apologizes for getting caught. Sam says it’s not her fault and releases her.
Bobby walks into the woods, looking for the guy he saw earlier. His son Daniel (Thomas Nicholson) appears and starts beating up Bobby for not saving him. Mary finds them and tries to stop Daniel, but Daniel turns on her. He starts choking her. Bobby gathers his strength and stops Daniel. He stabs him with an angel blade and Daniel disappears.
Dean and Sasha check on Mr. Rawling. Dean notices that he’s hooked up to bags of blood. He asks Neil, but Neil lies about it’s purpose. Dean dismisses Sasha and pulls a gun on Neil. Neil is a djinn and he’s killing hunters. When Dean asks him why, Neil says Dean told him to. Only it wasn’t really Dean, it was Michael.
Michael told Neil to find a quiet place to set up shop and kill as many hunters as possible. In return, Michael enhanced Neil’s djinn powers. He has the ability to read minds and make nightmares come to life. And he’s having fun with it. Neil attacks Dean to see his nightmares, but something scares Neil. Dean is able to push him off and beat him down. Neil tells Dean that Michael set up hunter traps everywhere, and he’s waiting to kill the Winchester family. Dean kills Neil to shut him up.
Dean unhooks Mr. Rawling from the needles and Sasha waits for him to wake up. The Winchesters return to the bunker where the other hunters are waiting. They are all happy to see Maggie safe and sound. Dean commends Sam for bringing Maggie home.
Mary patches up Bobby. He finally tells her about his son. Bobby blames himself for what happened to Daniel. Daniel followed him into hunting and that led to them joining the human resistance against the angels. He doesn’t know how Daniel died and he never found his body. Bobby says Daniel was the best thing about his life. Now he doesn’t know how to life, so he looks for ways to die. Mary says she will help him.
Dean talked to Maggie and she’s ready to go hunting again. Mary and Bobby tell the boys that they are taking a vacation. Sam sets them up in Donna’s cabin. Bobby tells Sam that he’s doing a great job with the new hunters. Mary promises to return in a few weeks.
Dean and Sam call all of the hunters they know to warn them about Michael’s traps for hunters. Dean feels bad. Sam says it’s not Dean’s fault and Dean knows. He’s trying to forget and move on. Sam says they will find Michael and they will find a way to kill him. Dean has hope that they will.
The Winchesters are taking their time finding out what Michael is up to. But it was nice to get Alternate Bobby’s back story. I honestly thought this episode was going to be about Maggie and how dying affected her. They implied that she is a little off, but I guess we’ll never really know.
