We’re back with another episode of Supernatural. When we last saw Team Hunter, Sam, Dean, Alicia Banes and Max Banes were dealing with a borrower witch with a penchant for twig dolls. Mary found out about Mick’s death and is now a prisoner of the British Men of Letters. Cass and Kelly Kline are still out in the world and no one knows where to find them.

This week’s episode, “There’s Something About Mary,” there’s something…going on…with Mary.
We start in the South Carolina woods where Eileen (Shoshannah Stern) is running away from a hellhound that is on her tail. She does her best to shoot the beast, but the monster is too much for her. Her body is grabbed and thrown around like a rag doll before she falls over, dead. A whistle sounds and Mr. Ketch (David Haydn-Jones) awards the hound with a piece of meat. “Good puppy,” he says.
Sam and Dean arrive at a motel room they think Mary might be staying at. Seeing that all of her stuff is gone, they assume that she is still with the British Men of Letters. Dean calls up Mr. Ketch and he tells Dean that he hasn’t seen Mary in a week. They instantly know that he’s lying.
Sam gets a call from Jodi and gets the sad news about Eileen. Hearing about how she died, Sam is understandably upset, but we find out that this is not the first hunter death that they have heard of. 7 hunters have died in the last 3 weeks, which means that someone is going after them. Could it be that all the monsters are banding together to take the hunters down? With Cass gone, Mick MIA, Mr. Ketch blatantly lying to them and they have no idea where Mary is, Sam and Dean are at a lost as to what is happening. But they have a Hellhound to deal with, which means they need to contact Crowley.
Down in Hell, Crowley is still trying to find Kelly. He knows Dagon is dead, which now makes their task a little easier, but Lucifer’s son will be born soon, which makes their task urgent. Crowley is displeased with his legion of Demons who have yet to find Cass and Kelly so he decides to motivate them.
Rick the Hunter (Andrew McNee) returns home where Mary is waiting for him. She invites him on a hunt to take out a Vampire nest, which he readily agrees to. He complains about the Brits coming at him to join, but he has no intentions of doing that. As he reaches into his fridge to get a beer, Mary pulls out a knife. They fight, but Mary eventually wins and cuts Rick’s throat.
In her cell, Mary wakes up as though she was dreaming the whole thing. Or was she?
Lady Bevell (Elizabeth Blackmore) enters Mary’s cell looking as smug as ever. Mary wants to know if she was outside of the building the night before. Toni plays if off, claiming that maybe Mary is having a tough time distinguishing fact from fiction. That alone gives Mary a reason to believe that she is being brainwashed. The British Men of Letters have decided to “realign” Mary to what she was born to be, “a natural born killer” using electroshock. They want to make sure that Mary loses her ability to make her own decisions, so that the BMoL can control her. In addition to controlling Mary, they want to get rid of every single American Hunter and replace them with a BMoL agent.
We also get in on a major secret: Mary was the one who invited Azazel into their home after he spared John’s life. She was the one who ultimately started this whole thing.
Crowley pays his dear old acquaintance Dr. Hess (Gillian Barber) a visit. IN natural Crowley “play both sides” fashion, we discover that he provided Mr. Ketch with a hellhound, and he has a “peaceful” agreement with the BMoL in the U.K. With the pleasantries over with, Crowley and Dr. Hess agree to one thing: they need to find the Nephilim. But while the BMoL want to destroy Lucifer’s son, Crowley wants to control him.
In Hell, Drexel the demon doctor (Alex Barima), does a quick examination of Lucifer’s vessel. He has not been able to shut down the security device inside Lucifer, but Lucifer needs to get out of Hell ASAP. Crowley eventually shows up and enters Lucifer’s cell, Crowley tries to make a deal with Lucifer: tell him the location of Kelly Kline and Crowley will protect her from the hunters and from Castiel.
After refusing Crowley’s offer, Lucifer realizes that he needs to get out of Hell much sooner rather than later.
At the BMoL base, two agents drag an unconscious Mary back into her cell. Toni goes to see Dr. Hess and Mr. Ketch and happily reports that they have completed another electroshock session. The back and forth between Mr. ketch and Toni is contentious, which Dr. Hess enjoys. Her plan is to promote Mr. Ketch to Mick’s old position once all the American Hunters are gone, but she also knows how much Toni will want the job.
Coming out of a post office, Dean shows Sam a letter that Eileen sent them four days ago. In it, Eileen explains why she returned to the States. She feared that the BMoL were following her and had tapped her phones. She then asks Sam and Dean if she could stay with them in the bunker. It’s unfortunate news, but knowing that the BMoL will do anything for intel, Sam and Dean search the bunker for any bugs.
Once they find one, it confirms that the BMoL have been listening to everything they’ve been saying.
Using the bug against the British Men of Letters, they concoct a story that a hunter wants to meet with them. The trap is set.
In Hell, Drexel tries to explain to Lucifer that leaving before his security device is sufficiently powered down, Crowley will still have control over Lucifer. Lucifer’s patience is starting to wear thin. He does get a piece of good news however. The power that Crowley uses to control Lucifer is now switching sides, meaning that it will only be a matter of time before Lucifer is able to control Crowley.
Mr. Ketch is showing Lady Bevell how to control the Hellhound using a dog whistle. Naturally the conversation turns to their common interest in the administrator job. Dr. Hess has apparently pitted them against each other, something that they both appreciate. Toni is confident that the job is her, but Mr. Ketch might have other ideas. A moment later Mr. Ketch receives a summons from Mary while Toni gets some intel on what the Winchesters are up to.
Mary is relieved to see that Mr. Ketch has answered her call. Mr. Ketch is hesitant to look at Mary given the state she’s in, but Mary has a request for him: she wants to die. Knowing hat her free will is being slowly taken away and that eventually she will be used as a puppet to kill her friends and other innocent people, she wants it all to end. She tricks Mr. Ketch into letting her get close to him, pulls his gun, and attempts to shoot herself. Mr. ketch, visibly distraught, stops her and assures her that it will all be over soon.
Mr. Ketch leaves and a hopeless Mary can only sit there.
Sam and Dean arrive at an old ironworks plant in the late evening. Knowing that the BMoL were listening in on their plan, they wait until two agents follow them into the building. Locking them in, the boys go after Toni who is sitting in her car. She puts up a decent fight, but Sam gets the drop on her.
Crowley pays Lucifer another visit to check in on the state of Lucifer’s son. Crowley, quite confidently eggs Lucifer on, but Lucifer, knowing full well that he can control Crowley allows him to engage in a long speech about how he’s better than Lucifer. During the speech, Lucifer makes Crowley do hilarious gestures without him knowing. After a moment of flapping his arms like a chicken, Crowley soon understand that Lucifer is in complete control.
Now with Toni in their custody, it’s time for the Winchesters to get their answers. Toni confirms that they killed Eileen but she also warns them that they will incur the wrath of the BMoL for attacking her. “No investigation, no trial. Just punishment and ruin. Possibly at the hands of Mary Winchester,” she tells them. Dean finds it hard to believe that his mother would join their ranks, but Toni assures them that Mary is one of them. And to make matters worse, Toni lets them know that Mary has been sleeping with Mr. Ketch. It’s something that the boys really don’t want to know.
On top of all that good news, Toni lets them know that Mick is dead and promises them that Jodi, Claire and all the other American Hunters are dead as well.
Now that Lucifer is free from his chains, Crowley does some serious backpedaling. Crowley tries to run away, but that’s just not going to happen with Lucifer in charge. Lucifer throws him around for the fun of it before he gets right to what he’s been wanting to do for so long. Picking up an angel blade, Lucifer beckons Crowley over to him. Standing before the angel blade, Crowley knows what’s going to happen next. Lucifer punches Crowley in the face, knocking him to the ground, but a quick look over to another demon gives Crowley all the time he needs to leave his body and inhabit a rat that’s right next to him.
Lucifer plunges the blade into Crowley’s chest. “Clean up on isle 7,” Lucifer jovially. But we know Crowley is no longer in his vessel.
Getting back to the bunker, Dean, Toni and Sam are greeted by Mr. Ketch and team of BMoL agents. Since they have no choice but to fight, Sam allows Toni to grab his gun and in some real fancy gun play, Sam is able to take out one agent while Dean shoots another one in the head. A gun fight ensues, but Dean takes out the last remaining agent, and gets Mr. Ketch’s gun using a powerful super slide.
Thinking they have everything under control, Dean demands to know where Mary is. Just then Mary appears with her gun drawn. She tells them to not to move and Dean assumes that she is on their side.
Unfortunately, she is under full control of the BMoL. Mr. Ketch disarms a stunned Dean, while Sam still holds on to Toni.
Mary approaches Sam and takes away his gun. Sam wants to know what has happened to his mother, but he gets no explanation. Mr. Ketch and Mary make their way up the stairs and when Toni moves to join them, Mr. Ketch makes sure she knows that not only is expendable, but she gets to stay in the bunker with Sam and Dean.
Mr. Ketch outlines what’s about to happen. The BMoL have changed all the locks in the bunker, and have cut off the water, and soon the air will be sucked out of the bunker. He means to leave Sam, Dean, and Toni in the bunker to die. With no one to help them, what can the Winchesters do?
Back in hell, the demons are cleaning up the mess that Lucifer left behind. Removing Crowley’s vessel from the throne room they fail to see the rat following close behind.
In the car, Mr. Ketch commends Lady Bevell on what she accomplished with Mary. Mr. Ketch knows that in time Mary will forget everyone, and Mary, now perfectly docile, is just “fine.”
Lucifer, standing upon a beautiful hill overlooking a picturesque mountain range, can finally start the search for his son.
What will happen in the 2-hour finale?
Supernatural airs on Thursdays at 8pm PST/EST on The CW.
The Thoughts So Far:
- Dean on getting kicked in the groin: “If you keep that up, we’ll have to start dating.”
- Lucifer, don’t ever change. The whole exchange between him and Crowley has been hilarious. Mark Pellegrino is a treasure, everyone.
- I’m still trying to hate you Mr. Ketch, but I just can’t. You are extremely arrogant, but that’s what makes you so much fun to have around.
- And another female hunter gone? Really?
- In this week’s episode of “Hey Weren’t You on Supernatural Before?” actor Andrew McNee, Rick in this episode, was a deputy in the Season 6 episode “And Then There Were None.”
- So Crowley is a rat, Lucifer is free, Dean adn Sam and Toni are locked in the bunker, Mary is a British Men of Letters puppet, Mr. Ketch is showing some semblance of humanity and Lucifer’s son will be born soon. Oh the drama going in to the season finale. I’m calling it, Mr. Ketch will turn to the light side and fight against the BMoL and Lucifer. Come on redemption storyline!
