Last week we enjoyed a monster-of-the-week episode, but this week’s “The Future” brings us back to Dagon and Kelly Kline.

When we last saw Kelly, Sam and Dean tried to take her way from Dagon with the help of Mick Davies and Eileen. The plan failed horribly and it resulted in the death of one of the British Men of Letters. Dagon got Kelly back and has since had her on lockdown in an undisclosed location.

When we see Kelly (Courtney Ford) and Dagon (Ali Ahn) again, it looks like Kelly has had it bad. Knowing that she is on borrowed time, Kelly has spiraled into despair. She has stopped eating and bathing, and Dagon must force feed her vitamins. Dagon doesn’t care what Kelly does to herself, she only cares that Lucifer’s son is born. She cannot wait to help him usher a time of death and destruction for countless humans, angels and demons.

Kelly, now fully aware of the evil that grows inside her, makes a difficult and painful decision. After being ordered to take a bath, Kelly decides she needs to end her life so that the baby dies along with her. Getting into the bathtub, Kelly does the deed and bleeds out.

Sam has been working hard trying to figure out how much time they have before Lucifer’s son is born. Using everything at his disposal, he narrows down the date to May 18th which gives them less than a month to find her. How, they have no idea, but maybe someone can help them. Cass enters the bunker after being MIA for weeks. Naturally Dean is upset that Cass abandoned them in their time of need. Cass explains that he went to Heaven to solicit the help of the angels, but he was unsuccessful.

Dean lays into him pretty hard, and Cass can’t help but feel bad that he wasn’t there for his brothers.

Finding Dean in his room, Cass tries to explain himself once more time. “I needed to come back here with a win for you,” he says, “for myself.” We all get where Cass is coming from in this instance. Cass has been dealt defeat after defeat. He was unable to save Dean, he was unable to protect Kelly, he’s wasn’t there when things got heavy. Dean is quick to remind Cass that he isn’t the only one who’s been batting 0. Sam and Dean lost Kelly as well.

Their conversation turns to elephant in the room. Can Sam and Dean kill an innocent? Sam is working on a way to save both the mother and the child and Dean believes that they will find another way. Cass is dubious about their plan.

Back at the safe house, Dagon finds the bloody tub, and Kelly huddled in a corner. Dagon checks her wounds and sees that she is completed healed. “He wouldn’t let me die,” Kelly says in complete awe of what has happened. Kelly believes that he protected her, but Dagon is sure that the baby is only looking out for himself.

Sam and Dean have come up with a plan: the grace extraction. They remember what happened with Gadreel (remember him?) and how Sam and Cass had a plan to extract Gadreel’s grace from Sam. As they understand it, they can extraction the grace from Lucifer’s son, making him human. This would save the lives of both Kelly and the baby. Dean goes to find Cass, but finds his room empty.

Cass meets up with Kelvin (Nathan Mitchell) and delivers the Colt to him. Yes, Cass has once again deceived the Winchesters. However, this time it’s for a good reason. Joshua has come up with a plan to take down Dagon and Kelly, but they needed the Colt to see the plan through. Cass tells Kelvin that he is doing all of this for Sam and Dean because he doesn’t want them to have to make that choice.

With the help of another angel, Hozai (Damian Mavis), Cass and Kelvin sneak into the safehouse. Cass thinks he has the jump on Dagon, but she gets a leg up on them. Taking out Hozai easily, Dagon sets her sights on Cass. Kelvin gets in between them and tells Cass to go find Kelly. Cass goes down into the basement where he finds Kelly waiting on the bed.

As Kelvin’s body falls to the ground Dagon goes to stop Cass but it’s too late, Kelly is gone. At the bunker, Dean and Sam start packing up their things because they need to find Cass and find him fast.

Trying to get as far away from Dagon as possible, Cass and Kelly drive down a road in the dead of night. Kelly thanks Cass for sparing her life, but Cass doesn’t want her thanks. He knows that he failed yet again. Where he goes from here, he’s not sure.

Lucifer calls on Dagon for an update. He knows right away that she is keeping something from him. She reluctantly tells him the truth about what happened with Kelly. Lucifer is furious that Castiel has Kelly. He commands Dagon to make it right, and knowing what’s at stake, she promises that she will. Looking over to a chair, we see that Kelvin is alive, and he’s about to face a rigorous interrogation.

Somewhere on the road, Castiel has to stop to receive orders from Joshua. Since Cass was unable to kill Kelly back at the safehouse, Joshua orders Castiel to bring Kelly through a gate that leads to Heaven. The trip will kill her and her baby instantly. Cass apologizes for what he has to do, but Kelly is still convinced that her son can bring peace to the universe. No one can know for certain if the child will be a force for good or evil, but no one can take that chance. Cass starts up his truck, but the engine dies. Curious.

Back at the safehouse, Dagon is working up Kelvin, but he refuses to give Lucifer’s “side piece” any information as to where Castiel might be or what he might do.

In a motel room, Castiel is doing his best to keep Kelly in his sights while he tries to figure out how to fix his truck. Kelly comes cleans about what about what she did down in the basement. She tells him that she killed herself, but that her son saved her. She knows he can be a force for good, but Cass sees it as Dagon does, that saving Kelly was an act of self-preservation. Kelly wants to believe that she is a part of some greater plan, but Cass, in his infinite wisdom and experiences, knows that there is no such thing as a “grand plan.”

Still, Kelly is unwavering in her belief that her is good. Cass gives her that, but the bigger question is, who will take care of Lucifer’s son when Kelly dies. They both know she won’t survive the birth, but who could possibly make sure that the child follows the righteous path. At that moment the baby kicks, and Kelly places Cass’s hand on her stomach. As they have that moment, Kelly’s eyes flash gold and she gets a glimpse of the future, where Cass is protecting her from a wall of flame…in front of the sandbox.

There’s a knock on the door, and when Cass answers it, Sam and Dean are there. Cass shows them the Colt. “Yeah that’s mine,” Dean says.

Dean wants some answers and he wants them fast. Sam tries to calm him down by showing him that Kelly is in the room with them. Cass explains his reason for the deception, but Dean isn’t hearing it. Sam tells Cass about their plan to extract the angelic grace from the baby, but Cass doesn’t think it will work, since they never finished the spell the first time they tried it. He believes that the spell could very well kill one of them if they tried it again. Despite the obvious downside, it’s worth a shot. What they don’t count on is Kelly flat out refusing to go along with their plan. She would rather go with Cass and enter the sandbox Heaven gateway than let them take the one thing that makes her son special.

Following her out of the motel, Sam tries to reason with her, but she has made up her mind. Dean makes one more plea, and Cass relents. They will go to the bunker to talk it out.

Cass asks Dean for the keys to the Impala and as they wait for Sam and Dean, Kelly gets a crazy idea. Taking the keys, she slides into the driver’s seat and starts up the car. Driving off, she leaves Sam and Dean behind.

Further down the road, Cass begs her to turn around but she knows what she must do. She is going to drive them to the sandbox and she is going to go through the gate. It is her firm belief that Cass will be the one to protect and raise Lucifer’s child because the child told her so. Cass knows he can force Kelly to turn back, but hearing Kelly explain her plan, Cass remains in the back seat.

SupernaturalS1219e

With only Cass’s truck at their disposal, Dean sets to work on fixing it. Sam doesn’t know why Cass would go along with Kelly, but Dean understands. He knows Cass wants a win so bad that he will do anything to get it.

At the sandbox, Joshua (Paul Barton) appears and welcomes Kelly. Before he can approach her, Dagon appears behind him and smites Joshua, leaving him a cloud of dust. Cass quickly jumps in front of Kelly, shielding her from Dagon, but Dagon starts to beat up Cass, and right before she kills him, Sam and Dean arrive. Dagon throws Sam aside and when Dean draws the Colt, Dagon takes it away. “Time to take this off the board,” she says as she melts the Colt into two pieces.

Without the Colt they have no chance of killing Dagon by conventional means. Cass gets up, and tries to continue the fight. He approaches Kelly and tells her to run, but she shakes her head and holds his hand instead. Dagon mocks their adorable hand holding, but there is a reason for it. Transferring the archangel power into Cass, he is able to stop Dagon before she kills him. Dagon, bewildered, doesn’t know how Cass can stop her, but as her hand bursts into flames, the rest of her is quick to go.

Sam and Dean stand there in disbelief. They have no idea what they just witnessed, but Cass knows. It was the combined powers of him and lil’ Lucifer. In that moment, Cass becomes a true believer. Instead of seeking out a way to kill the baby, he now wants him to be born with his full power. Sam and Dean try to stop him from taking the baby and Kelly away, but he knocks them both out.

With Kelly in tow Cass walks back to the truck. Kelly wants to know what the baby said to Cass, but it wasn’t words that Cass heard. He was given a glimpse of the future and it’s a future that Cass wants to make happen.

Supernatural airs on Thursdays at 8pm PST/EST on The CW.

The Thoughts So Far:

  • I love that the gift Dean gave Cass was a mix tap of the top 13 Led Zeppelin tracks…on cassette. It only cements the fact that the Winchesters are so wonderfully old school.
  • Speaking of, I wonder what 13 “traxx” were on that cassette.
  • Is Castiel the Winchester’s purse dog? I think that’s adorable because purse dogs are adorable.
  • WWCD? That’s going on a t-shirt.
  • This all has to wrong, right? It pains me to see Cass swallow up the idea of an idyllic future once Lucifer’s child is born. That child is not good; that child is a deceiver just like his father. The baby is clearly preying on those who have lost their way and are looking for renewed faith or purpose in their life. It’s the same as when Lucifer seeks out potential vessels: look for the saddest, most desperate human and promise them something greater.
  • For once I would love to see Cass get a real win, but as always, Cass is going to learn a harsh lesson and it’s going to break him just a little bit more. I hope you prove me wrong, CW. Stop hurting Cass!
  • I will say, this was an excellent episode and kudos to Amanda Tapping for directing this one. This whole season has been marvelous. I had my doubts about the Lucifer’s son storyline, but this episode proved me wrong. Am…am I a believer now?
