This week, we have Hellhounds.
Spoilers in 5…4…3…2…1…
We start in Sheridan County, Nebraska, where a young, happy couple, Marcus (Connor Paton) and Gwen (Angelique Rivera), are out camping in the woods. The couple seem to be genuinely in love, but their relationship is about to hit a speed bump. Gwen is about to move but Marcus wants to propose to her. Walking through the woods looking for firewood, he practices his proposal. Off in the distance he hears a sound, and then he’s suddenly attacked by an invisible beast. Running back into the encampment, Marcus tells Gwen to run right before he is viciously attacked from behind. After taking care of Marcus, the invisible beast attacks Gwen, but she hits it with an axe. The distraction gives her enough time to escape.
Back at the bunker, the Winchesters are returning from a marathon hunting spree. Unbeknownst to Dean, the British Men of Letters have been keeping them busy. As Dean sits down, his clothes covered in ghoul, wraith and siren remains, Sam gets another message from the BMoL about the Nebraska case. Of course Sam has been lying to Dean this whole time (AGAIN) about where he’s getting his case information, still they head out to Nebraska to see what happened.
Pulling up to the crime scene where Marcus was attacked, Sam gives Dean an update on Mary who’s off working a case for the BMoL. Dean also has an update on Cass, who’s investigating angel deaths.
Entering a diner in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Cass is looking into the case of a waitress, Sara, who was killed by Dagon in a previous episode (Family Feud, Ep. 13). The owner of the diner, Herb Nelson (Gabe Khouth), is happy to see Agent Solange there because he has something to show him. Opening a heavy steel door, Herb tells Cass a strange, conspiracy theorist story about Sara involving reptilian aliens. Playing the security footage he shows Cass what happened with Sara, Kelly Kline, the other angel, and Dagon. Herb continues on but Cass is more interested in taking the footage. He now knows what happened to Kelly.
Back in Nebraska, the local Sheriff is debriefing Sam and Dean on Marcus’s death. The Sheriff thinks it’s a bear attack, but Sam wants to interview Gwen who claims they were attacked by an invisible wolf. Sam and Dean know it must be a Hellhound.
At Gwen’s house, Sam and Dean don’t realize that the Hellhound has followed them into her home. Sitting with her, they try to calm her down by telling her that it was a bear that attacked Marcus and that she is no longer in danger. Gwen refuses to believe them and kicks them out of her house. They leave, but the Hellhound stays in the house with her, watching her.
Within seconds the Hellhound is on her, but Gwen is able to run away from it. Her screams, fortunately, are heard by Sam and Dean who are able to get back into her house and save her.
Down in Hell, Crowley and Lucifer are having a little chat. Crowley is still pretty pleased with how he’s handled the Lucifer situation. With all the blustering he’s doing, he is really trying very hard to show Lucifer what’s what. Lucifer, of course, believes his position to be a temporary one. A knock on the door tells Crowley that it’s time for him to get back to being the King of Hell. Those 410 crossroads deals aren’t going to approve themselves, you know.
Back at Gwen’s house, Sam and Deal are giving Gwen “the talk.” Starting with what Hellhounds are, it sounds like what they’re talking about it insane, but Gwen is surprisingly accepting of the explanation. “But like I said, I know what I saw. And what I saw was insane.” Sam explains that Hellhounds only come after people who have sold their souls. Gwen denies ever having sold her soul and she knows that Marcus would never do such a thing. Since neither one of them sold their souls, the Winchesters have no choice but to call Crowley to try to figure out what’s going on.
In Hell, Crowley seems to be in his own personal version of it. Having shirked his duties as King of Hell, he’s now inundated with demon grievances that require his rulings on them. Fortunately Dean calls him and spares him for a time. Crowley, still upset about what happened with Gavin (Family Feud, Episode 13), doesn’t want to have anything to do with the Winchesters, but when he finds out that a Hellhound is killing people who haven’t sold their souls, he starts to pays attention.
Asking his two lackey demons, Victor (Marc Senior) and Tommy (Paul Piaskowski), about his hounds, he finds out that one of them, Ramsey, has escaped. Crowley must now help the Winchesters find his hound. “You miss me?” he asks as he appears in the middle of Gwen’s house.
Walking to his car, Castiel is met by another angel, Kelvin (Nathan Mitchell). Cass immediately draws his blade, but Kelvin is only there to find Kelly Kline and her unborn son. Kelvin offers to help Cass in his search.
Back at Gwen’s house, Crowley is giving Sam, Dean, and Gwen a history lesson on Ramsey the Hellhound. The Winchesters are surprised that Crowley cannot control her, but the reasoning as to why makes sense. Lucifer saved her life once and now she is only loyal to him. And now, it looks like Ramsey the Grudgekeeper has it in for Gwen because of what happened in the woods.
Down in Hell, Lucifer is a little tied up, but maybe not for long. Victor and Tommy’s curiosity have gotten the better of them and they want to know what’s in the Facilities closet. Opening the door, they find Lucifer sitting in his chair, bound and gagged. “I knew it,” Victor says. Oh no.
Victor and Tommy immediately prostrate themselves before Lucifer, but clearly Lucifer just wants to be set free. They then go on about how they knew Crowley was hiding something, so they released Ramsey to cause a distraction. Victor was then able to steal the key that would free Lucifer which Victor would be more than happy to do…after Lucifer meets their “demands.”
Out in the woods, Team Hunter is ready to hunt down a Hellhound using special glasses that will allow them to see the beast. Dean pairs up with Crowley to “track down Cujo,” which leaves Gwen in the safekeeping of Sam. While they all want to keep Gwen safe, Dean is a little more interested in making sure that Sam keeps the Impala safe. “I know how to drive,” Sam protests. As Dean and Crowley start their search, Ramsey quietly stalks them.
Kelvin and Cass decide to catch up a bit. Cass wonders about the state of Heaven and Kelvin explains that it’s pretty much the same as it’s always been; however, with Lucifer and his son’s impending birth, all the angels have banded together to stop him. And now they need Cass to join them. The angels recognize that Cass has had “more field experience than the next thousand angels combined” so Kelvin gives him the hard sell: while it’s nice that Cass has the Winchesters to back him up, maybe it’s time that he partnered up with the angels instead.
But it’s not just about pooling resources to find Kelly. If Castiel helps the angels, he will also be welcomed back into Heaven. Castiel is obviously skeptical of that promise, but Kelvin assures him that it’s a legit offer, not from him, but from Joshua, the one angel who can make it happen. It seems Joshua has a plan to deal with Lucifer, and all Castiel has to do is hear them out.
After what feels like hours, Victor has finally gotten through his list of demands, which is good, since Lucifer looks like he can’t even deal with them anymore. Thinking that Lucifer has agreed to everything, including making him King of the Crossroads, Victor unlocks Lucifer’s chains. Imagine his surprise; however, when Lucifer immediately grabs him by the throat. “We had a deal!” Victor says before his is poofed into a pile of ashes. Lucifer sets his eyes on Tommy, who’s only demand is that Lucifer “make Hell great again.” Knowing what’s going to happen to him, Tommy is more than willing to let the Lord of Hell take his life. “See now you just made it weird,” Lucifer says, giving time for an awkward pause before reducing Tommy to a cloud of ash.
Walking through the woods, a bespectacled Dean and Crowley have a discussion about who rubbed off on who. Dean believes they have rubbed off on Crowley, who not only saved Cass, but is now there to help them save “the girl of the week.” Crowley believes that he rubbed off all over Dean, who, as a Hunter, would nevre work with the King of Hell for any reason. Maybe they both rubbed off on each other and made each other better?
In the car, Gwen apologizes for everything that has happened. Overcome with grief, she asks Sam to pull over.
Back in the woods, Dean and Crowley come across Marcus’s mangled body. It looks like Ramsey did drag him back to her den, but now she’s nowhere to be found.
With the guilt of Marcus’s death weighing heavily on Gwen’s shoulders, she decides it’s time to let it out. She had asked Marcus to go camping with her, even though she knew she wanted to end things. She knew that Marcus loved her more than she loved him. That has got to be heartbreaking.
Before they get back on the road, Sam hears the familiar snarl of Ramsey, who was able to track them. Ramsey does a number on the Impala before Sam gets out of the car to confront her. Unfortunately he’s unable to do anything with the angel blade in his hand, as Ramsey rams herself into him, knocking him to the ground. Gwen gets out of the car, with a cooler in hand, and hits Ramey in the face with it. Unable to see Ramsey, Sam can only go by the steam coming from her nostrils. With a well-timed, lucky thrust, Sam stabs Ramsey right in the chest.
With Ramsey dead, Gwen is now safe. She gives Crowley a hug, while Sam gives him an awkward “thank you.” But the hugs and thanks go without a response from Crowley as he disappears without saying a word.
Now back in Hell, Crowley seems unsurprised to see Lucifer free and sitting on his throne. Thinking that he has the upper hand now, Lucifer hits Crowley, knocking him to the floor. “Bye, bye Crowley,” Lucifer says as he brandishes his angel wings, but Crowley gets up, completely unfazed. Snapping his fingers, Crowley makes Lucifer’s wings disappear. Crowley snaps his fingers again, and Lucifer doubles down in pain. Two more snaps of his fingers and Lucifer is on the floor, confused as to what just happened.
“I’m always ten steps ahead,” Crowley says and then explains all. Before redirecting Lucifer’s soul back into his original vessel, Crowley had every single spell and rune from the cage carved into the molecular structure of the vessel, ensuring that Crowley would always be in control. “This vessel, that’s your true prison.” But Crowley isn’t going to stop there. Oh no. Crowley is going to go after Lucifer’s son and take care of him while Lucifer watches. And that wouldn’t even be the end of it. “I’m still, just getting started” Crowley says.
When the Winchesters arrive back at the Bunker, Dean is on the phone with Cass who gives him an update on Kelly Kline and Dagon. Once he’s off the phone, Cass looks at Kelvin, and he’s clearly conflicted. Then we see why. Before them is the familar playground portal to Heaven and Cass is about to take a trip.
Dean notices how strange Cass was on the phone, but he can’t place why. Just then Sam’s phone rings, and it’s a call from Mick. Sam ignores the call, but Dean assumes it’s Sam’s completely made-up computer program. Knowing that he can’t keep this secret any longer, Sam tells Dean that the cases they’ve been doing for the last two weeks have all come from the British Men of Letters.
Sam tries to make his case for joining with the Brits, but it looks like he doesn’t have to anymore. Dean knows that he can’t fight the influence the BMoL have had, especially since they took down the Alpha Vampire. While Dean doesn’t like working with the BMoL, he agrees that maybe it’s time for the Winchesters to work with them but on one condition: that if something goes wrong, they are out of their arrangement.
Mick calls Sam again and this time he answers.
Supernatural is on Thursdays at 8pm PST on The CW.
The Thoughts So Far:
- Dean on having dirty boxers: “It’s two for two. Doesn’t count if you flip them inside out.”
- Dean on computers: “Computers. Monsters, porn. Is there anything they can’t do?”
- Dean on bathing: “I got baby wipes in the car.”
- That’s a nice Negan bat you’re sporting Dean. Any chance you got that from Jeffrey Dean Morgan? OH WHAT? You did? Brilliant.
- STOP LYING TO DEAN ALL THE TIME.
- After hearing the drama with Awar and Morak, I kind of want to see a Supernatural spin-off show that’s just Crowley dealing with incompetent demons all the time.
- Dean to Sam about the Impala, “Just imagine she’s a beautiful woman. A beautiful, beautiful woman.”
- Crowley on Dean’s Impala love: “Ew.”
- Pellegrino Lucifer will always be the best Lucifer. I don’t care what people say and I will keep saying it after every recap. I know you should never root for the bad guy, but I will always root for him. He is so perfect. PERFECT!
- I like that Mick Davies is referred to as Frodo by both Sam and Mary.
- That camera shot through Sam’s glasses was a really great. I feel like this season they have gotten little more stylistic with their camera work. Last week it was the slow-mo gun shot, this week it was the glasses.
- In this week’s episode of “Hey, Weren’t You on Supernatural Before?” The actor who plays conspiracy theorist Herb Nelson, Gabe Khouth, also played the character Lester Young in the Episode “Time After Time” (Season 7, Episode 12).
- So Cass is going back to Heaven, but we won’t see what happens for a few weeks. I have no ideas as to what’s going to happen here. Cass has been exiled to Earth for so long now, I’m sure that the idea of going back to Heaven and being with his family again is appealing, but where does that leave him and the Winchesters? Throughout this season, each story has reinforced the idea that the Sam+Dean+Cass+Mary=Family. Mary considers Cass a son, and Cass considers Dean and Sam his true brothers. But really, how strong is that bond? I would like to think it’s very strong, and something has got to happen that will cement the idea that the Winchesters are Cass’s true family now. Unless the end of the season shows Cass going back to Heaven. NOOOOOO! That sounds terrible.
