Last week Sam and Dean helped a young psychic named Madga. Through her psychic ability she accidently killed two people which resulted in her imprisonment in her own home. Despite her power, the Winchesters let her go. Unfortunately Mr. Ketch caught up with Magda and “cleaned up the Winchester’s mess.”
This week we have another good story surrounding an old enemy of the Winchesters.
So what happened? Spoilers below!
We start in a small town where an older woman is entering an antique shop in the wee hours of the morning. The shopkeeper presents her with a rare Nazi era pocket watch. The woman is eager to purchase it, but the shopkeeper ups the price on her. Unable to secure a sale, the shopkeeper puts the pocket watch away but suddenly his hands catch on fire. Soon he is completely enveloped in flames. The woman seizes the opportunity to grab the pocket watch and make her way out, but unfortunately she also spontaneously combusts. A shadowy figure watches everything from the second story.
At the bunker, Dean is intently working when Sam comes back from a food run. Dean has come across the news story about the two people who died the night before. Seeing this as a possible case, they toss around a couple of ideas as to what could cause these people to spontaneous combust.
At the antique shop, Sam and Dean look around for evidence of what happened. They notice the charred spots where the bodies were. Sam gets on the computer and starts looking through emails and shop documents. Dean walks around and fumbles around with the antiques. Sam cracks into the hard drive and finds some interesting information on the pocket watch. Dean, meanwhile, has found a secret door to a secret room. This secret room is filled with nothing but Nazi paraphernalia. It seems that Marv the shop owner was into some underground dealings that catered to a specific group of people. The pocket watch was a part of Hitler’s inner circle, but it is nowhere to be found.
Making the connection of the Nazi items and the spontaneous combustion it looks like Sam and Dean are dealing with the Thule Society (a group we were introduced to in Season 8).
While Sam and Dean are at the antique shop, we jump to a young woman Ellie Grant (Allison Paige) coming home with her date, Nick. In the bathroom she tries to convince herself to get it on with him, but soon she hears a commotion out in the living room. Opening the door slightly, she watches as Nick catches on fire while two rather imposing men look on. One spots her and they make an attempt to get her. Fortunately she is able to escape down the fire escape, but she leaves some blood behind, blood that the men can use to track her.
Sam and Dean call their old friend Aaron Bass (Adam Rose) for some information on the Thule. Since his grandfather Rabbi Bass is no longer around to fight the Thule, Aaron has now taken up the cause. Outside of a nightclub in Berlin, Aaron tells them that the Thule have mostly been sticking to the Fatherland, however he was able to get some intel on a mission called “Das Blut” or “The Blood.” Sam and Dean have no idea what that could mean, but it sounds like trouble. Sam gets a police alert about the body at Ellie’s apartment, so they go to investigate.
At the apartment, they get some information from the police as to what happened to Nick and that Ellie is waiting in a police car. Ellie waits patiently for the police to come and get her, but she is met by Christoph Nauhaus (Keenan Tracey), one of the men from the night before, who cuffs her to a roof handle and drives off in the police car. Sam and Dean come out of the apartment building just in time to see it drive away. Hopping into the Impala they give chase.
In a random parking structure, Christoph pulls up next a black van. Getting out, he calls his dad to give him an update. As luck would have it, Sam and Dean have gotten there too. They easily capture Christoph and save Ellie. In an abandoned office, Sam and Dean explain the whole situation to Ellie about the monsters and what they do for a living. She is in disbelief about the whole thing. Who could possibly believe in Nazi necromancers who practice blood magic? Anyway after a little convincing, Christoph decides to tell them everything. The pocket watch is a vessel for Hitler’s soul (like a Horcrux) and the grand plan is to resurrect Hitler by injecting his soul into one of his relatives. This is where Ellie comes in. As a distant relative of Hitler, she is the perfect candidate for the soul transfer. CRAZY!
So now we have Christoph’s father, Commandant Nauhaus (Gil Darnell) seeking both the pocket watch and Ellie so he can resurrect Hitler. This would be the “Das Blut” mission that Aaron mentioned.
Ellie, overcome with emotion about the whole reveal, goes into another room. Sam follows her while Dean stays with Christoph. Ellie can’t believe that someone would want to use her to bring back Hitler. Of course Sam can relate since some Big Bads tried to use him to resurrect Lucifer.
Dean comes in and tries to get Ellie to calm down. They hatch up a plan to use her as bait in order to take down the entire Thule Society on one shot. A second later, Commandant Nauhaus’s men enter the office. Sam and Dean engaged them and an action-packed fight takes place. This gives Christoph time to make his escape. It also gives Ellie time to get out of there. Knowing that she is no longer in the building, Commandant Nauhau’s men leave quickly to follow her.
Ellie doesn’t get very far when she is captured by Commandants Nauhaus and Christoph. Sam and Dean are oblivious to the fact that she has been taken. In his fancy limo, Commandant Nauhaus scolds Christoph for telling the Winchesters about the plan. Christoph is confused as to why his father would want to resurrect Hitler, but Nauhaus believes that the world needs a stronger hand and that this is the best time for Hitler’s return. Because millennials.
Arriving at a secluded airfield, Nauhaus’s men take Ellie away in order to prepare her for the Purification Ceremony. Nauhaus also has plans for Christoph. Nauhaus has a henchman named Fritz take him out into a field, and it’s obvious that Nauhaus wants Christoph dead. After a brief scuffle, Christoph shoots Fritz and makes his escape. So much for fatherly love. At this point, I feel a little bad for Christoph.
At a diner Sam and Dean make their plan to find Ellie and Commandant Nauhaus. Unfortunately they have no idea where to find them. Christoph conveniently appears and lets them know that he can help them find Ellie if they protect him. The Winchesters have a hard time trusting him but Christoph tells them what happened with his father and Fritz. Sam and Dean agree to take him with them.
The Purification Ceremony has started. Of course, Nauhaus has no intention of implanting Hitler’s soul into Ellie. No, Nauhaus only wants her for her blood. Ellie wakes up in the middle of a blood transfusion. From her bed, she watches as the pocket watch is paced on Nauhaus chest and activates. It burrows into Nauhaus’s chest and what do we get? We have Hitler.
Outside, Sam and Dean are stealthy making their way into the building. As soon as they enter they are immediately captured and brought to Hitler. While Hitler revels in being alive in this new century, with his pocket-sized Goebbels and twitter, it gives Ellie enough time to get up weakly and shoot one of Hitler’s men. The distraction gives Sam and Dean a chance to kill off the rest of the men. Cornered, Hitler tries to talk his way out of it, but Dean will have none of it. “Heil this,” he says as he shoots Hitler in the head. Dean’s very excited that he killed Hitler. It must be a great feeling.
In the end, Ellie is freed from the Thules, she’s making some plans for the future, and Hitler is dead (again). In the Impala Dean reminds Sam one more time that he killed Hitler and it’s time to celebrate with pie.
Next week Jody returns for a case! And in the trailer, do I hear Billie’s voice? Oh man she’s got it in for the Winchesters. They really need to do something about that one.
Supernatural is on Thursdays at 9pm PST on The CW.
The Thoughts So Far:
- This season has gotten off to a pretty great start. I like the fact that they are bringing back things from past episodes. We had the psychics last week, and now the Thule Society. It’s good that they are not trying to invent new things. After 12 seasons, that would have been a little hard.
- Also, they brought back Dean’s love of pie. I missed that.
- I know Christoph is supposed to be a bad guy, but I really liked him. The small talk he had with Dean is pretty great.
- Millennials get a bad rap in a lot of shows. I’m not one, but I have some sympathy.
- Dean should always bring a grenade launcher. Why deprive him of all the fun, Sam?
