Big things are about to happen.

Last week we saw the premiere of Season 12 of Supernatural. It was a “where are they now after the events with The Darkness” episode and we saw some of our Hunters in pretty rough places. We were also introduced to the British Men of Letters whose only goal right now is to get a hold of all the American hunters.  After capturing Sam, Toni and Ms. Watt interrogated him through less than savory means. Dean, Mary and Castiel went searching for Sam while Crowley went searching for Lucifer. What’ll happen now!

Spoilers below!

When we last saw Sam, he was alone and injured in a dank basement. Well, how things have changed. As Toni and Sam have their sexy time, things seem a little suspect and as Sam puts it, “This was unexpected.” Yes, yes it is. Sam does his best to get things going, but Toni wants to talk Hunter business. It kind of feels a little bit like an…interrogation.

Cass has been canvasing a town in Missouri while Dean has been searching the camera feeds looking for Sam. They seem to be grasping at straws until Dean suggests that Cass check out real estate offices. Maybe the Men of Letters are playing by the rules. Before hanging up, Dean expresses his concern about his mother being there and how to act around her. Dean wants to be able to talk to his mom about what has happened, but he doesn’t want to overwhelm her since she is still adapting to everything. Cass gives him some parting advice, “Don’t make thing needlessly complicated as you humans tend to do.” Super helpful. When Mary appears she and Dean have a heart to heart. While Dean is thrilled to have his mother back, he doesn’t want to have to keep worrying about her. Mary has another concern, however. She feels complete responsible for the yellow-eyed demon targeting Sam and because of that, she doesn’t know how to face him.

Back in the “bedroom,” Toni is working her feminine charms on Sam. Toni tells Sam her theory about some of the American hunters being compromised. Sam doesn’t believe it but suddenly he is bombarded with visions of being in the basement and the tortures he’s endured. Coming to, he finds that he wasn’t in bed with Toni but in the basement instead. Toni confesses that it was a hallucination caused by a bit of spellwork and a potion that got him talking. Unfortunately for her, she can’t do the spell again, so she must resort to other methods. Yay…more torture for our dear Sam. Isn’t Toni the absolute worst?

Back at the Bunker, Dean and Mary have a chat about John when Cass calls with new information. He has found a farm that has been rented by a woman with an English accent. Unfortunately Cass can’t get into the building because it’s been warded. Dean plans to meet Cass alone but Mary means to go with him. Dean tries to discourage her from coming along, but Mary assures him that she can handle herself. You can’t keep a hunter out of the game for too long.

Toni has been busy with Sam. Her list of demands seems unreasonable: she wants the names and locations of all the Hunters, the passcodes to the Men of Letters database in the bunker and surprisingly, she wants to know about his relationship with Ruby.  Just as she’s about to get into it, she receives a call from a fellow Men of Letters, Mick (Adam Fergus). It seems that Toni has overstepped her bounds and he has been sent to take her back to England. She thinks she’s on the verge of breaking Sam, but she’s disobeyed orders.

Last episode we saw what everyone was up to except for one person. It looks like Rowena (Ruth Connell) has been busy trying to secure her future and live a “normal” life. Her date with a successful businessman is cut short when Crowley shows up.  Even though Rowena wants to leave her old life behind, Crowley needs her services for something greater: finding Lucifer.

So where is Lucifer now? Apparently he’s in Cleveland looking for his new vessel. Vince Vincente (Rick Springfield) is just finishing up a concert and while his band mates are about to party in Cleveland, he wants nothing to do with it. He’s still mourning the death of his wife. This alone make him the perfect candidate to be a vessel (Lucifer really does like them sad and alone and dealing with tragedy). In his dressing room Vince is visited by Lucifer through flicking lights.

On the road, Dean and Mary are making their way to Aldrich, Missouri, where Sam is being held. Dean is still worried about bringing his mother along but since the Men of Letters know a lot about Sam and Dean, they won’t be expecting Mary to be there. Their conversation turns to Hunter life. While Mary’s death changed John, and in a small way Dean as well, Sam tried to get out of that life. Mary is surprised to hear that even though he was attending Stanford and making a normal life for himself, he still came back to the life. In the end, the brothers needed each other.

Vince is having a rough night. After returning to an empty hotel room, he washes his face and blood comes out of the faucet. Not a good sign. It’s not long before he starts hearing the voice of his dead wife. With static on the tv, picture frames floating around, things are about to get bad. Then suddenly his wife appears and we learn that she killed herself because of the way he treated her. Poor guy. Vince, ever remorseful, professes his love for his wife. Claiming she’s an angel she promises to take his pain away only if he invites her in. Which he does out of sheer sadness and regret.

Rowena is searching for Lucifer but she’s having a hard time since she doesn’t have a personal item of his and Crowley doesn’t know what he looks like. Instead she focuses on finding a supremely evil aura. It works but Crawley doesn’t want his location just yet. He needs to know who he’s dealing with before he and Rowena can go after him to send him back to his cage. Rowena points out that they can’t send him back to his cage while he’s in a vessel but Crowley seems to have a plan for that already.

In the basement, a weakened Sam is recovering from his injuries. Outside Cass waits for Dean and Mary to arrive. Once they do, Dean plans to look around the building in the hopes that he can find a way in. Unable to get into the building because of the warding, Cass must stay behind and at Dean’s behest, Mary is forced to stay behind as well.

Checking out the farmhouse, Dean looks everywhere for a way to get in. Finding the door that leads to the basement and Sam, he is trapped buy warding on the ground.  Sam, unaware that Dean is there, is waiting for Toni, issuing another defiant “Screw you”. Toni now has the upper hand and drags Dean in. She now has Sam’s one weakness at hand.

Arriving back at Hell, Vince/Lucifer is greeted by Crowley who is waiting for him in the throne room. Lucifer, of course, wants to reside over Hell, but Crowley offers him an alternative. If Lucifer lets Crowley rule Hell, it would give him a chance to conquer Heaven. Now that God has left with Amara, there is no one left to rule it. Lucifer considers it for second before threatening to smite Crowley. He is stopped by Rowena who paralyzes him. With Lucifer unable to move, Crowley makes an attempt to damage the vessel by throwing sulfuric acid into his face. Yikes.

Now that Toni has Dean chained up, she begins to beat him, hoping that Sam will eventually give her the information she needs. In this round of questioning, she asks Dean about Benny and their escape from Purgatory. Apparently the Men of Letters have been watching the Winchesters for a very long time.

With Lucifer’s face disfigured from the acid, Crowley commands Rowena to send Lucifer’s essence back into the cage. She tries, but she fails. Attempting to paralyze him again, they realize that Lucifer is way more powerful than the two of them. Using his angelic grace, Lucifer heals his vessel’s face. Once healed, he makes a move towards Crowley, but Crowley has already left. Rowena, now alone with Lucifer, is trapped.

Now that they have a moment, Dean and Sam take the time to catch up. Sam tells Dean who Toni is but it leaves Dean confused. He can’t understand why she would be against them when they should all be on the same team. When Toni returns, she is ready to go through another round of interrogation, but before she can get started Mary arrives just in time to stop her. A fight ensues between Mary and Toni which gives Dean enough time to free himself. Just when Mary is about to defeat Toni, Toni is able to cast a spell, causing Mary to choke. Dean punches Toni in the face, breaking her hold on Mary. At that moment Mick and Cass arrive.

Mick seems to be the more reasonable of the two British Men of Letters. Appealing to Sam and Dean, he concedes that Toni went too far. Mick extends an olive branch to the Winchesters and suggests that they work together. Mick assures them that he’s sincere but nevertheless understands their hesitance. Mick gives them his number and gives them time to cool down.

In the end, the Winchesters know that the British Men of Letters are not what they appear to be. Lucifer has claimed his seat in Hell and has kept Rowena as his prisoner.  Mary, Sam and Dean take trips down memory lane in an attempt to connect with each other as a family.

Toni, however, is on a warpath. She believes that if the British Men of Letters are going to end the supernatural threat in the US, then all obstacles, including the Hunters and the Winchesters must be eliminated. Mick is reluctant to go to such measures, but he assures Toni that if he will if he has to and has called upon the services Mr. Ketch. Mr. Ketch seems to be a badass. Maybe.

Next week looks to be a normal Monster of the Week episode a the Winchesters go to investigate some creepy dolls. I hate creepy dolls.

Supernatural is on Thursdays at 9pm PST on The CW.

The Thoughts So Far:

  • “I can’t believe I’m once again down some dank hole seeking the devil! When does it end?” #firstworldwitchproblems
  • Rick Springfield is no Mark Pellegrino (obviously), but I’m interested to see his take is on the Lucifer character. Misha Collins approached it is as Mark Pellegrino with Cass’s voice but Rick seems to be doing his own thing. I like it. No one should be trying to mimic Mark. He was just too good.
  • Mick to Cass: “I reckon he could finish me off without breaking a sweat. Am I right?” Cass: “I don’t sweat under any circumstances” LITERAL CASS IS BACK!
  • I have no idea who Mr. Ketch is, but he reminds me of Jean Reno from The Professional. So he must be stopped.
  • It’s good to see Dean enjoying some pie.
  • What I like about this season so far are the callbacks to things that happened in past seasons. Mentioning the yellow-eyed demon, Ruby and Benny was nice along with bringing back John’s journal. Dean eating pie – I mean, when was the last time we saw Dean enjoying something. It’s been all doom and gloom for a while now. Let’s keep that going!

Not a whole lot of tracks in this episode. Shame.
