Great Caesar’s Ghost!

It is impossible not to smile at this clip from the upcoming season premiere of Supergirl on The CW, featuring Melissa Benoist in the titular role along with our first look at Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.

When we first see him, however, he’s mild mannered Clark Kent, full of that middle America, down home Smallville charm. It’s easy to see that they are 100% channeling the Christopher Reeve style portrayal of Kent — homespun, good-ole-boy, no-curse words and dopey. He’s simple and kind and as unsuspecting as you can get. Perfectly Clark Kent. But the moment you need him, the switch goes off and he’s the hero everyone needs.

He takes off. So does Supergirl, who gets there first. When Superman arrives and says, “need a hand?” and Kara responds, “Hey cuz,” — it’s everything we’ve ever wanted from this series. Rescuing 200 people from the fiery crash of a plummeting space plane is just another day for these two. Saving the world is just their family business and it’s nothing to them to save everyone together and do it with smiles.

If this is indicative of the rest of the season than we are all in for a very good season two indeed.

In speaking with EW.com, EP Andrew Kreisberg spoke of how the two superheroes meet up, saying, “The two of them actually show up to the same crisis. It’s not a turf war, they just both heard about the same tragedy on the news and both flew into action.”

He goes on to add that this, of course, brings them together to have some quality family time with each other —

“They haven’t really gotten a chance to spend time together, especially since she’s come out as Supergirl, and they both want that. Both of them have a bit of sadness about them — they both have that sense of feeling alone, they both have that sense of feeling different — and both of them remark that that loneliness, that alienation, that isolation goes away when they are together.”

THE CW HAS A NEW HERO AND SHE’S BRINGING SUPERMAN WITH HER – When a new threat emerges in National City, Kara/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) teams up with her cousin, Clark Kent/Superman (guest star Tyler Hoechlin), to stop it. Kara is thrilled to have family in town but it leaves Alex (Chyler Leigh) feeling a bit left out. Meanwhile, Hank (David Harewood) and Supergirl are stunned by the pod that came crashing to Earth. Glen Winter directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Andrew Kreisberg & Jessica Queller (#201).

The season premiere airs on October 10th.
