Greetings, friends, and welcome everyone to Mobile Game Monday, where we chat about games you can play on the go. If you like to game on a phone or tablet, this is the place for you. Join us every week as we go on all sorts of adventures.

Wahoo! To celebrate Mario Day, we’re running and jumping with the best of them: Super Mario and friends. This crew is no stranger to handheld devices, but did you know you can play on your phone, too? Super Mario Run from Nintendo puts the Mario experience right in the palm of your hand. Let’s go on this exciting Mario adventure together.

Super Mario Run

Gameplay

Super Mario Run has the simplest controls I have ever seen in any game. Choose your favorite Super Mario Bros character, pay Toad Rally Tickets then watch them run through one level after another. Literally, watch them run. The character auto runs meaning the only thing left for you to do is tap to jump. That’s it. You even automatically vault over smaller obstacles.

Some still screenshots of cut scenes from the game. Left, Mario looks up at Bowser in the Koopa Clown Car. Middle, Mario has removed the bridge from underneath Bowser and he is about to fall into lava. Right is a cute mini version of Peach's Castle and the Mushroom Kingdom surrounded by happy Toads.

Your job as a player is to time Mario’s jumps just right. Stomp Goombas and Koopas on your way to that goalpost. Perfect timing on an enemy will give a nice boost to your jump. Tap a bit longer and you will jump a little higher and longer. You can even do that fun wall slide and jump move Mario does in the newer games.

Play through levels in various game modes to collect coins and earn decorations for your very own Mushroom Kingdom.

Game Modes

Remix 10

Remix 10 costs one rally ticket and runs you through 10 very short consecutive levels. If you die, take a loss for that level and immediately start the next. Find all three rainbow coins in each level for an even bigger bonus. There is a very short waiting period between runs.

Left is Mario running through a brightly colored level filled with classic green pipes and golden coins. Middle is Mario running through a dark underground level. Right is a brightly colored sky level complete with clouds and sky-rise mushrooms. Mario is about to jump from one mushroom to the next.

Earn rewards at the end of each run, like cute decorative items for your kingdom. For example, I got the Princess Peach and Yoshi Goal Poles. Clear enough areas to earn more playable characters like Toad and Daisy. Occasionally, earn a Super Bonus Game that lets you hit a Rainbow Question Block for a chance at rare décor.

World Tour

The World Tour consists of six worlds with four levels each. Like other Mario games, the last level of each world is either a Bowser Castle or a Ship.

Unfortunately, there is a catch with this game mode. Only the first World or so is free and you must pay $9.99 to unlock the rest of the game. However, this is a one-time-only purchase and there are no other in-game purchases. This also unlocks even more playable characters and no more wait times in Remix 10. You will also receive 20 rally tickets, 3000 coins and a ? block.

Each level has a set of pink, purple, and black coins placed in tricky places. Find them all to earn extra special rewards. Beware: They get more and more challenging to grab and may take several tries, but that’s what Super Mario is all about.

Toad Rally

Toad Rally puts you against another player as you simultaneously run through the same level. Get the most style points by performing difficult jumps and impressive moves. Whoever attracts the biggest crowd of cheering Toads wins.

Three panels show a Toad Rally race. More Toads accumulate in each panel until a winner is declared by Toadette.

Your new Toad fans will stay in your kingdom. Toads come in red, blue, green, purple and yellow. Collect them all to unlock special decorations for your kingdom like the infamous rainbow bridge. Unfortunately, some Toad colors are only available if you purchase the full version.

Events

Currently, Wonder Flowers from Super Mario Bros. Wonder are appearing in Toad Rally. All sorts of wondrous things happen like making Golden Goombas appear. Collecting these will fill a stamp card that unlocks rare rewards like the Golden Goomba Statue.

Coin events give you an extra 1.5x bonus for all coins collected during the event so keep an eye out for these.

I would love to see more events, especially on a day like Mar10. A way to earn exclusive decorations and characters would be cool. There are so many characters and variations of Mario that the possibilities are endless. Add Tanooki Mario as a playable character, and I will grind as long as it takes. I’d probably even pay.

Our Adventure Ends Here

Essentially you are given a demo version of the game and must pay $9.99 to unlock everything else. This may seem like a steep price for a mobile game but considering there are no other in-app purchases, it is reasonable. I have definitely spent more than that on other “free” mobile games.

The game itself is the high-quality level running action you would expect from a Super Mario experience. However, it doesn’t take long to run out of things to do because you have to wait for tickets to replenish to run levels.

Even with the paywall and wait times, Super Mario Run is still a great way to add some quick Mario fun to your day. I love having my own adorable Mushroom Kingdom to decorate with cute Mario-themed items; I’m a sucker for such things.

Overall, this is a cute little game but if you are looking for a full-blown Mario experience, I suggest just playing on the Nintendo Switch or 3DS.
