We already know that Steven Yeun is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. But did Invincible and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman just reveal the actor’s top-secret MCU role?
Steven Yeun’s MCU Role
Kirkman is the comic book creator behind Invincible and The Walking Dead, both of which have become smash-hits. He first collaborated with Yeun on the actor’s breakout role, as Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead season 1. While Rhee did not survive TWD season 7, Yeun’s professional relationship with Kirkman did. Yeun has gone on to play the titular role in Invincible, the popular ongoing animated superhero series. On this series, Yeun plays a half-alien teenager who discovers he possesses superhuman strength and durability, making him more or less… well, you know.

You might not be aware, but Kirkman has something of a reputation for close collaboration with actors. It seems the respect is mutual, as many actors who appeared on TWD returned to play roles of varying sizes on Invincible. In Invincible season 1, for example, the roster of the ill-fated Guardians of the Globe team is stacked with TWD alums (including Sonequa Martin-Green, Trekkies).
However, Kirkman’s close friendship with the actors with whom he collaborates apparently comes with access to some sensitive information. During an interview with David Finch on YouTube, Kirkman let slip that Yeun had called him after a Thunderbolts costume fitting. Scheduled to release in July 2025, Yeun’s involvement had previously been reported on. However, the role he will play has been kept secret.

Nevertheless, Kirkman seems to have revealed what part Yeun will play. “My good friend Steven Yeun is playing the Sentry in a movie,” stated Kirkman. And when Kirkman realized he might have shared a secret, he didn’t shy away from the revelation. “I don’t work for Marvel,” he remarked. “What are they going to do to me?”
