Highlights:

  • Steven Yeun has pulled out of the MCU’s Thunderbolts.
  • While Marvel never officially confirmed his casting, the actor was first reported to join the film in February 2023.
  • Thunderbolts is still on track to release on July 25, 2025.

In an article posted on Variety on Tuesday, January 2, 2023, it was reported that Steven Yeun is no longer involved in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Thunderbolts. Yeun’s breakout role was as Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead adaptation on AMC. But the rumor that the actor would be playing Sentry in Thunderbolts has apparently been proven inaccurate.

Thunderbolts Without Yeun

Thunderbolts is the story of a team of super-powered antiheroes. Little is currently known about the plot of the MCU movie. However, in some narratives, the Thunderbolts step up with the A-list Avengers team is indisposed. Given the “disbanded” status of that recognizable superhero team in the current MCU continuity, this could be the premise for the upcoming Marvel entry.

We’ve already been introduced to the characters who will make up the MCU’s Thunderbolts roster. First of all, the team is assembled by Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Val (as she doesn’t like to be called) was first introduced in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, reappearing in Black Widow and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Val is the Director of the CIA. However, her motives and background remain shrouded in enigma.

Who’s Who

At WonderCon 2023, Marvel Studios revealed art depicting the team’s roster (see cover). Naturally, Val appears. Joining her is Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), a hither-to-underutilized antagonist from Ant-Man and the Wasp. Next is Red Guardian (David Harbour), who made his debut in Black Widow. In the center is Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), the beyond-worthy successor to the title of Black Widow. Then comes the Winter Solider (Sebastian Stan), a longtime MCU participant. Next comes U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) from Captain America and the Winter Soldier, and finally Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), also from Black Widow.

In addition, the movie features The Bear star Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role. Furthermore, Thunderbolts will feature the debut of Harrison Ford as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, a role previously played by the late William Hurt. The movie is currently scheduled for release on July 25, 2025.
