We have Stargirl! Announced by DC, Nickelodeon star Brec Bassinger has been cast as the teenage heroine. The new Stargirl television series is set to debut on DC Universe, the all-DC-all-the-time streaming network. The series was announced during San Diego Comic Con this year by creator Geoff Johns. Now fans will finally be able to see the happy teenager fight against the darkness of the world.
How did she become the heroine? Well, Courtney Whitmore’s life is flipped upside down when her mother remarries and moves them from LA to Nebraska. When she’s explores her new stepfather’s stuff, she finds a costume. Turns out her step-father was a superhero sidekick, the Star-Spangled Kid. She wears the costume to annoy her new stepfather but ends up keeping it, deciding to help people. Her stepfather builds a suit he dubs S.T.R.I.P.E. to help her out and protect her. She later acquires a cosmic staff and goes under the alias Stargirl.

Stargirl is incredibly important to writer/executive producer/creator Geoff Johns. She’s based on Johns younger sister Courtney, who unfortunately passed in an airplane crash. So this casting was important to get right – and he believes he’s found the perfect person. Speaking in regards to Bassinger’s casting, he said “There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl, and after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger. Brec’s warmth, strength, humor and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I’m so grateful she’s signed on for the role.” A major compliment from the creator!
With Stargirl cast, I’m pretty excited to see more. I’m curious what kind of tone they’re going for – whether it’s more happy-go-lucky or tackling more serious issues with a positive mind. Johns is set to write the first episode. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will be joining Johns in executive producing the series. Sadly, we don’t know when the series will be coming up but with the most important casting already done, we like to imagine it’ll come out next year. It will join the already announced line-up of Titans, Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol, Young Justice and more!
What do you think of the casting? Are you looking forward to seeing a series based around Courtney Whitmore? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more DC news. The Stargirl series currently doesn’t have a release date for it’s DC Universe debut.
