Fans have been starving for new Stargate content since the mini-web series, Stargate Origins, ended five years ago. This universe kicked off in 1994 with the first movie titled Stargate. Since then, the franchise exploded with Stargate SG-1 (1997-2006), Stargate Atlantis (2005-2008), Stargate Universe (2009-2011), Stargate Infinity (2003) and Stargate Origins (2018). This isn’t to mention the many games, both digital and physical, that were inspired by the series.

However, we may be in store for something new very soon. Here is what we know so far: CNBC reported that on March 17, 2022, Amazon bought MGM and the sci-fi franchise along with it. It was an 8.5 million dollar deal.

Hope for new content had been looking bleak until 2022, when Gateworld, a fan site, reported that pitches were exchanged at Amazon Studios. Many didn’t believe anything would come of these pitches, but fans held onto hope.

On April 14, 2023, prayers were answered when Deadline broke the story that new Stargate projects were in production. They noted that there are both TV and film plans, with a movie likely coming first. This was announced alongside many other possible projects like RoboCop and Legally Blonde.

Stargate SG-1, perhaps the most popular project in the franchise, is based on the movie of the same name by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. The series, created by Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright, takes place a year after the events of the feature film and follows an elite Air Force special ops team, SG-1, as they explore the galaxy and eradicate alien threats.
