The saga many of us know and love will be coming to an end this December. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker gave us a special look during D23 at what we can expect from the end. For the rest of the worldwide fans not at the convention, we were able to see the footage today. Do we really have to say goodbye?

The Rise of Skywalker footage starts with the legacy of the Star Wars franchise. Flashes of the original trilogy and prequel trilogy come on to remind us that all of these films are connected. We’re then quickly shown some of the sequel trilogy before diving into the new footage. We see our heroes looking out at a very crowded festival in the middle of the desert, seemingly celebrating something. We see Leia in the middle of a jungle giving a little bit of a sassy look to someone off screen. We then cut to images of the Resistance lining up their starships for battle with a quick cut to The First Order’s mighty stardestroyer fleet.

We then see Finn and Jannah looking out of a cockpit in worry, apparently in the middle of a battle. C3PO appears to have his golden arm back but is sporting a set of red eyes. We then cut to a red beam destroying a snowy embankment. Are they trying to rebuild the Starkiller Base weapon? Meanwhile Rey is in the middle of the woods, training with her lightsaber. It seems like she’s learned to call her lightsaber back to her. Kylo Ren on the other hand is on a stormy planet alone, taking out his lightsaber with a vengeance. We then see the two of them dueling on a metal bridge, giving it their all. The screen cuts to black and we hear the Emperor speak and Darth Vader breathing. When the footage comes back, Rey is wearing a black cloak with the hood pulled up. Her red lightsaber has two blades which unfolds to a double sided lightsaber ala Darth Maul.

Deep breaths, everyone, deep breaths! The Rise of Skywalker footage looks AWESOME! I’m so excited to see where the story goes. Of course the money shot is what appears to be Darth Rey. What’s going on with that? Is it a vision? Is it Rey pretending to be evil to fool the Emperor? Ahhhh! There’s so many questions! It will be really sad to see this story end but all good things must come to an end, right? Then we’ll have more stories to look forward to in the galaxy far, far away. For now, let’s get excited for the conclusion!
