With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker coming out later this year, the future of the franchise has been unknown. It was being reported that we would be taking a break from films after the last film in the saga came out and that appears to be true – for a little while. According to a report by THR, the break will not be a long one as three unnamed titles have been given release dates.
After The Rise of Skywalker, fans will be able to see a new film on December 16, 2022. From there we have two other films scheduled for December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026. So there will be a three-year gap until we see another Star Wars film and will see one every two years after that. It’s currently unclear what films are slated for these dates. We know that writer/director Rian Johnson is currently working on a trilogy of films while Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are also working on a trilogy. There are also rumors and whispers about reviving projects, such as an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff film. However, these are just rumors so it is not known if it fits into the current schedule.
While the wait seems long for another Star Wars films, older fans have waited much longer. In fact, there was a 16 year gap between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace while a 10 year gap happened between Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens. So three years seems like a cake walk. Fans will also be able to get their Star Wars fix on the upcoming streaming service, Disney+ where two live-action series are in the works.
It’s good to know that we won’t have to wait too long for more films. It appears that Disney and Lucasfilm took the flop of Solo: A Star Wars Story and said they couldn’t do more than one film in a year. Wait they fail to realize is that it was because it was a film that many people weren’t interested in. Did we need to see the origin of Han Solo when there’s a galaxy of stories out there? The saga films will definitely be on hold for longer but I think many of us are looking forward to the future films.
What do you think of the news? Are you happy to know more films are on the way or are you sad you have to wait longer? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Star Wars news. The Skywalker saga ends on December 20th, 2019.
