I can’t stop talking about Star Wars, guys. And even though The Last Jedi is out in two months, I’m also looking forward to the future. And we got the most microscopic glimpse at it recently. With thanks to SWNN, we heard the director sit down and hint at what’s to come in the next chapter of the saga.
While speaking with BBC Radio 4, JJ Abrams and composer Michael Giacchino spoke about their working relationship in film. And, as always, the subject of Star Wars came up. With Abrams coming under heavy fire using “too much nostalgia” in Episode VII, it appears he’s planning on going the opposite way. When prompted about how both Star Wars and Star Trek change lives and influence people heavily, Abrams replied with the following.

Well, it’s certainly something that I’m aware of now working on Episode IX – coming back into this world after having done Episode VII. I feel like we need to approach this with the same excitement that we had when we were kids, loving what these movies were. And at the same time, we have to take them places that they haven’t gone, and that’s sort of our responsibility. It’s a strange thing – Michael’s worked on things like Planet of the Apes and Star Trek and Star Wars, and these are the things of dreams. Yet we can’t just revel in that; we have to go elsewhere.
Lucky for him, it appears Rian Johnson has laid the ground work even further for taking the story in a direction we haven’t seen before. In addition, we don’t need to be convinced of this continuation of the character’s stories – we’re on board. Abrams had the hardest job of introducing new characters while continuing original trilogy characters stories. To try to appease fans, he did lay heavy on the nostalgia and I don’t blame him for it. So with The Force Awakens out of the way and The Last Jedi changing things up, we can truly take it elsewhere. Where elsewhere will he go? We’ll have to wait and see. But one thing’s for sure – I can’t wait!
