Star Wars Celebration came to a close on Sunday and it was a difficult day – Easter happened, I was sick. But the last day of the convention happened and two panels were left – very good panels. One focusing on droids, the other was Mark Hamill’s one man show. Let’s do a quick recap of those plus things we missed at the convention.
These Are the Droids You’re Looking For
Droids are a staple in Star Wars so it only makes sense that they have a panel focused on them. Hosted yet again by Warwick Davis, the panel focused on our love of droids. They even had a contest to build a droid out of random parts by audience members. Matthew Wood, sound engineer at Lucasfilm/Skywalker Sound, was the first guest. He’s voiced various droids but most notably he was the voice of General Grievous from Episode III. They spoke about how he got the job of Griveous plus what he does at Lucasfilm. He noted that he felt weird that Anthony Daniels wasn’t there. So a sketch occurred where Davis called Daniels and told him of the panel. Wood left the stage and Daniels called Davis back, only to have him appear behind him. Daniels then sat down and told some stories about Threepio, they even had a little chat with BB-8. Daniels abruptly left the stage which gave room for the latest droid to take the stage – Alan Tudyk. Tudyk was charismatic as always and recanted stories of his stilt walking and his backpack that he had to wear on difficult sets. They showed a video compilation as well. Daniels rejoined the stage and they were able to talk together about droids, Daniels giving Tudyk sly punches. The panel came to an end with a storm of droids taking the stage.
Star Wars Show Live tidbits
Being that there were only 2-3 panels that day, SWSL had to have a lot of filler. So they didn’t disappoint with interviews from Dave Filoni, Peter Mayhew, industry insiders, walking the con floor and more. They got Pablo Hidalgo to canonize their t-shirt canon as well. It was fun times for the group. Mark Hamill joined them later despite his lacking voice. Overall, a job well done to the team for the whole weekend of filler content.
Hamill Himself
Mark Hamill is always a delight. An actual, wonderful delight. So his one man show was no different. He recanted many funny Star Wars stories including the throne room scene and he cleared the air about his popped blood vessel. He talked about his children are terrified when they’re told he’s Luke Skywalker and they haven’t seen him age to hilarious effect. He also covered some of the recent work he’s being on the Flash, his collectors show Pop Culture Quest (which renewed for a second season) and more. His dogs also stormed the stage, only to run away again. He also took fan questions. He wrapped up the panel by retiring his ugly blue sweater.
Closing ceremonies took over multiple stages as they all thanked the fans for a great weekend. They also thanked the crew for bringing the convention together and it came to a close with a montage. Woohoo!
