David Benioff and D.B. Weiss  have not had a good year. The last season of one of the best series to ever grace television, Game of Thrones, crashed and burned. Then, this past weekend, the duo appeared at the Austin Film Festival and basically stated they didn’t know what they were doing on the series.

Their year started with a bang as it was announced that Benioff and Weiss would be creating a whole new trilogy for the Star Wars universe. In August, they signed a big money deal with Netflix, as in a nine figure money deal.

Tonight, Deadline reported breaking news that they are now off the Star Wars project which was set for 2022. Benioff and Weiss are saying it’s because of their new Netflix deal and they don’t have the time. “We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy said, “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

The above statements make it sound like there is a chance they make work together again. On the other hand, with the heat that Benioff and Weiss have taken recently, it’s quite possible that the real story is they were asked to leave.

Whatever the situation really is, they are making big bucks over at Netflix now for a ‘water cooler’ type show and Star Wars has been left with no writers for this new trilogy. Rian Johnson is still working on a different set of films for Star Wars and it was recently announced that Marvel’s Kevin Feige is too. Thankfully, fans have numerous series on the horizon with Disney+. Just a thought, perhaps Lucasfilm and Disney should check out some female storytellers for some movies in the galaxy far far away.
