With the Skywalker saga ended, Lucasfilm was left with endless potential for content. Star Wars could explore different characters from the Skywalker saga, such as The Mandalorian. They could dive into a brand new era after the films, traversing through the galaxy after the New Republic and First Order disintegrated. Or they could go with the third option, which is exploring a time long before the Skywalker lineage was relevant in the universe. If you picked the third option, you would be correct! Enter Star Wars: The High Republic.

So what exactly is The High Republic? According to StarWars.com, it’s a new publishing initiative introducing fans to a brand new set of characters. Set 200 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, fans will learn the stories of these characters during a time when “the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order are at their zenith”. The stories will cross over adult novels, young adult novels, children’s books and comics. Since these will not cross over into any film or television series territory, the writers spearheading this project will have absolute freedom to tell the stories they want to tell.

“This was a golden age for the Jedi, and also a time of galactic expansion in the Outer Rim. So expect there to be rich tales of exploration; charting out the galaxy, meeting new cultures, and discovering what pioneer life in the Outer Rim was like,” James Waugh, Lucasfilm vice president, franchise content and strategy, said. “This is an incredible sandbox for our storytellers to play in, both within publishing and beyond, and we can’t wait to see the great fiction they build within it.”

The first books have already been announced but will debut this year at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim. Here’s the list of the upcoming titles:

Into the Dark by Claudia Gray (Young Adult novel)
A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland (Middle Grade novel)
Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures by Daniel José Older (IDW Publishing comic book series)
Star Wars: The High Republic by Cavan Scott (Marvel comic book series)
Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule (Adult novel)

While I haven’t been able to dive into the publishing side of Star Wars, this is a really exciting project. I love that the writers are able to create something entirely free of everything that’s come before. While there’s a few rumbles about how it’s not The Old Republic, like the massively popular MMORPG, this is the step in the right direction for both Lucasfilm and Star Wars. We need new stories and new characters. We cannot depend on the films anymore. Frankly, I can’t wait to see what this brings.
