What do the two shows have in common? One very strong woman: Kate Mulgrew. In Star Trek:Voyager, Mulgrew pioneered the way for future leading-role, female star-ship captains, and she did so with poise and grace. As Captain Kathryn Janeway, she kept her cool when things went wrong and spent her time in the holodeck continuously learning from the great minds of the past. She may not have always had the answers, but she had the faith that someone would be available to help and the self-assurance to know that asking for that help wouldn’t make her weak. In Orange Is the New Black, Mulgrew is a very self-assured woman that gives no cares to you and your problems. As Galina “Red” Reznikov, she is a natural leader and uses her power and influence to keep order, often through shear intimidation and fear.
What do you get when you blend the two television shows together? A little bit of mad genius, actually. Netflix’s mashup is narrated by Mulgrew herself, in the role of Captain Janeway recording a Captain’s Log. The premise, gleaned from the Facebook caption and the captain’s “we have re-materialized” line, suggests the Voyager has found itself in an alternate universe (possibly the Mirror Universe?) where things are not quite as they should be – as evidenced by the Janeway doppelganger, Red.
Watch the video below, a quick-cut of bridge scenes that include brief glimpses of Janeway’s crew with scenes of Orange Is the New Black on the view screen, and let us know what you think. Would you watch that episode of Star Trek?
They don't make transporters like they used to.
