On Wednesday, March 9, 2022, the long-awaited teaser trailer for the upcoming Paramount Plus series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was released. The debut episode of the show’s ten-episode first season will premiere on May 5, 2022, but this teaser makes May seem further away than ever!

The Return of Captain Pike

The teaser centers on Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, a role he first played in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery and reprised for three episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks. In the opening scenes of the teaser, Pike seems to be on some kind of Kirk-style leave, sporting a shaggy beard and apparently in a remote, snowy location. However, an unidentified character states that the Captain is needed, followed by a shot of a horseback-riding Pike being subjected to a Starfleet shuttlecraft flyby.

This is followed by a montage of shots of the eponymous strange new worlds themselves, under narration by another unidentified (but perhaps Vulcan-sounding) character which describes First Contact as “the province of children’s stories and science fiction.” There’s also a shot of what appears to be a shirtless Spock (Ethan Peck) and a scene with an away team beaming down.

This gives way to the reappearance of the hero ship of hero ships, the USS Enterprise. This incarnation of the archetypal Trek ship also first appeared in the second season of Disco, but only in the season finale. At the conclusion of the teaser, a clean-shaven Pike appears in a Starfleet uniform, apparently having returned to the Enterprise, as all her captains inevitably seem to do.

Strange New Worlds

Although they did not appear in the teaser, in addition to the return of Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Strange New Worlds will reintroduce Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Doctor M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). It will also introduce La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) and Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia).

Hopefully, we’ll get our first look at the rest of the bridge crew in action in a full teaser as the May 5 release date approaches! Check out the trailer below! What are your thoughts so far? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
