STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS: Get Your First Look at the Live-Action Beta Shifters from LOWER DECKS

Since San Diego Comic Con in July 2022, we’ve known that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 will feature a crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks. Today, the French teaser trailer for Strange New Worlds has given us our very first glimpse of Ensigns Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) in live-action.

Both Quaid and Newsome bear more than a passing resemblance to their animated Star Trek characters. This made the translation from animation to live-action more straightforward than it might have been with certain other Cerritos crewmembers. However, one element did pose something of a design question: Bradward’s hair.

Quaid discussed Bradward’s hair in the audio commentary for the Lower Decks season 3 finale, “The Stars at Night.” Quaid appeared alongside fellow actors Dawnn Lewis (Captain Carol Freeman) and Fred Tatasciore (Lt. Shax). He revealed he directly asked Lower Decks creator and showrunner Mike McMahan about Bradward’s purple hair color. According to Quaid, McMahan stated that the color was meant to represent “dark color” in “animation code.”

However, as anticipated by Quaid, that’s not how the hair color was interpreted by fans. “Well sure enough, people are like, ‘I love his purple hair, I love his purple hair!’ To the point where I did this Strange New Worlds thing, and that was like a whole discussion… ‘Should we make it dark, should we make it purple?'”

Quaid says that he had some very specific ideas about Bradward’s hair color, stating, “‘No, it has to look purple. At least in certain lights, we have to make sure it’s purple.'” And that’s not all the commentary revealed about Bradward’s hair: “I don’t even know if I can say it yet, but in that episode of Strange New Worlds, we do tell you why it’s purple… There is an answer there.”

We don’t know when in the 10-episode season the Lower Decks crossover will air. However, the first episode of Strange New Worlds season 2 is scheduled to make its debut on Paramount+ on Thursday, June 15, 2023. And check out our first glimpse of the Beta Shifters in this still from the now-private French teaser:

L to R: Newsome as Mariner, Christina Chong as La'An Noonien-Singh, Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Quaid as Bradward, and Ethan Peck as Spock.
