Paramount has announced that the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series will be led by Academy Award-winning actress Holly Hunter. Hunter will play the role of the captain and chancellor of the titular academic institution.

We still currently know only so much about the upcoming Starfleet Academy series. However, what we do know is very exciting. For one thing, the show’s writers’ room includes Star Trek: Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome.

Not too much is currently known about the show’s story beyond the basic premise. Starfleet Academy “will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy.” However, we do know that the series will also introduce “a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”
And it’s also worth noting that we still don’t officially know in which era Starfleet Academy will be set. However, the initial series announcement in March 2023 did state that the campus was “re-opening.” During Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, we saw a reopening of the Academy. It’s plausible that this indicates the series is set in the 32nd Century. This creates the possibility that returning Discovery characters could appear, even in regular roles.

Starfleet Academy will begin production in late summer 2024. The show is executive produced and showrun by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. Also executive producing is Gaia Violo, who wrote the series premiere. They are joined by executive producers Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber.
