The latest high-profile actor to join the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has been announced. The Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning Paul Giamatti is the latest actor to be announced as part of the show’s cast. And the word on the street is, he’ll be playing a recurring antagonist on the show.

Starfleet Academy Featuring Giamatti

Giamatti joins another high-profile actor who was previously announced as having been cast in the series: Holly Hunter. Hunter’s involvement was announced last month. She will be playing the captain and Starfleet Academy chancellor. Presumably, this means she will be the show’s protagonist. However, this isn’t guaranteed. Don’t forget: Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) was first presented as a protagonist, too.

Meanwhile, Giamatti has been billed as the “first season’s main villain,” a recurring role. According to the information we know so far, Giamatti’s character connects with the backstory of one of the show’s featured cadets. However, any casting that has been completed regarding the show’s cadets has yet to be made public. Furthermore, we don’t know whether Giamatti will be playing a human character or an extraterrestrial one. After all, the Franchise has a long and proud history of casting extremely well-respected actors and then putting them under extensive latex makeup (see also: Christopher Plummer).

While we only know so much so far, the details surrounding Starfleet Academy are steadily beginning to take shape. It will be set in the 32nd century timeline introduced by Discovery Season 3. The setting will be both in space and on Earth (the Academy is located in San Francisco). And finally, the show boasts the largest set ever constructed for a Star Trek show. This is located at Pinewood Studios Toronto.
