Hit it.

There’s wonderful Star Trek news today. Many fans felt this was coming already, but that did not diminish the excitement. There’s a new Star Trek series headed our way, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

CBS All Access announced the news via “Star Trek on CBS All Access'” Twitter account. Delivering the joy were the actors themselves who portray the characters the show will be centered on, Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romjin who play Captain Pike, Spock, and Number One, respectively.

The three characters have appeared on Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Short Treks. The chemistry these actors have with whomever they are in a scene with is palpable. In fact, you should check out the Star Trek: Short Treks episode Q&A post haste! Mount’s portrayal of Captain Pike is particularly good. I can’t imagine the second season of Star Trek: Discovery without him. Fans noticed. CBS noticed. Now there is a full series order.

The  new series will take place on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Now, usually Star Trek shows are named for the ship/station where most of the action takes place. In this case, however, there is already a Star Trek: Enterprise series which air from 2001-2005, hence this new show’s name, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

We don’t know yet if the series will take place before or after the U.S.S. Enterprise crew met the Discovery crew. According to StarTrek.com, “The series will follow Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock and Number One in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.” So, way before Kirk,  that is good for Mount, since Star Trek fans already know his future. At least, in the prime universe.

Check out the announcement video. If you’re a Trekkie, you’ll squeal. I mean, I did. Especially with Mount’s very last words. One thing I garnered from the announcement video is that Strange New Worlds will be more old school in how it approaches Star Trek’s theme of discovery and exploration. In the video, Peck talks of the unifying ethos of Star Trek and Mount says,, “We’re gonna get to work on a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future.” All the Yes!

The biggest question, however, remains unanswered: Will Number One stay Number One? Or, will Number One get a name?

The series premiere was written by Akiva Goldsman with the story by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. Goldsman, Kurtzman and Lumet will serve as executive producers in addition to Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Aaron Baiers, Akela Cooper and Davy Perez will serve as co-executive producers. Akiva Goldsman will remain an executive producer and a key part of the creative team on Star Trek: Picard as well. The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. ~StarTrek.com
