The chief programming officer at Paramount Streaming, Tanya Giles, confirmed that the Star Trek: Discovery spin-off focusing on Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and her involvement with Section 31 remains in development. TVLine obtained a quote from Giles during the Television Critics Association press tour event confirming “conversations” regarding the long-awaited Paramount Plus series ensure the show is “still in development.”

The series, which would explore Mirror Georgiou’s involvement with the secret Starfleet division, was first announced in January 2019. In the intervening years, excitement surrounding the prospective spin-off has continued to build. In 2022, Yeoh stated during several press interviews for her film Everything Everywhere All at Once that the Trek series remained in development.

Section 31 spin-off

Section 31, the clandestine intelligence organization that isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty maintaining Starfleet’s pristine image, was first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Several episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise explored the origins of the shadowy organization.

More recently, the organization played an integral role in the second season of Discovery, which is when Georgiou became involved (season 1 deleted scene aside). Since then, Section 31 has been mentioned or appeared in several episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks, most recently in “Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus.”

Little is known about the specifics of the Section 31 spin-off. For example, while Section 31 operative Leland (Alan van Sprang) may not have survived Discovery season 2, he could appear if the show is set before the season finale. Furthermore, Section 31 operative Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif) seems like a prime candidate for a supporting role.

Discovery seasons one through four are currently available for streaming on Paramount Plus, with season five arriving later this year.
