In the ziggurat on the hidden world, the Loom lurks. But Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) is hidden in a room decorated in the style of Earth’s 1960s. Also present are Gwyn (Ella Purnell), Dal R’El (Brett Gray), Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui), Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas), Zero (Angus Imrie) and Murf (Dee Bradley Baker). Wesley comments on the various objects in the room.

The cadets demand some context. Wesley says the Travelers use the room to train operatives working in other time periods. For the record, this room is almost certainly the one used to train Gary Seven in Star Trek: The Original Series’ “Assignment: Earth.” This character also informed Star Trek: Picard Season 2.

Wesley continues that no one uses the secret rooms after the Travelers abandoned the ziggurat. He says they’ll be safe from the Loom inside. But Gwyn doubts this assessment. They can hear the Loom outside. Wes suggests waiting them out rather than confronting them. He continues that the Loom can not only kill you but completely erase your presence from history — including from the memories of others.

Away Team

Aboard the USS Voyager-A, Tysess (Daveed Diggs) prepares to lead an away team. Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) arrives. Tysess informs her of anomalous readings, determining the entity that attacked Holo Gwyn might be on the planet. Janeway’s counting on it. Maj’el (Michaela Dietz) overhears them. The Doctor (Robert Picardo) insists they’re equipped with his newly refined temporal stabilizers.

Maj’el approaches and requests permission to join the away mission. She cites her telepathic link to Zero as logical support. Janeway concedes precedent for cadets on away missions. However, she isn’t eager to endanger Maj’el. But Tysess says they need the help. He vows to protect her with his life. The away team is ordered to the transport room.

Soon, Maj’el, Tysess and Middleton (MacGregor Middleton) beam into the ziggurat. Maj’el senses the presence of the other cadets, albeit faintly. But the away team is unknowingly being pursued by the Loom. Time slows as the Loom attacks. Tysess activates his stabilizer. However, the Loom devours Middleton. Tysess activates Maj’el’s stabilizer. They use grenades to cover their escape, but they’re only so effective. Tysess attempts to summon emergency transport. But Maj’el removed her comm badge, so only Tysess and her badge are beamed up.

Tysess says he must return. He discovers that Janeway has no memory of Middleton. Furthermore, The Doctor has no medical records for a Middleton. Tysess realizes that the Loom can erase people from existence. Meanwhile, Maj’el locates the vault door inside the ziggurat. She calls to Zero, sensing their proximity. Inside the 60s room, Zero senses Maj’el’s presence, too. But the Loom locate her.

Assignment: Earth

Inside the 60s room, the phone rings. Wes answers. The call is Maj’el calling for Zero. She’s trapped in the temple. Wes activates a screen that shows Maj’el’s predicament. Dal urges Wes to rescue her. However, Wes says she wasn’t part of the plan, and he can’t risk it. Meanwhile, Maj’el is menaced by the Loom. But Dal leaps into action, opening a portal that brings Maj’el inside.

Zero catches Maj’el. Maj’el realizes Zero is Zero. They’ve both begun to grow beyond their programming. Dal says even the greatest captains must trust their guts sometimes. Wes starts to correct him but thinks better of it, saying he’ll “find out.” However, the Loom has finally reached the 60s room. Wes reveals another vault door and begins working on opening it. Beyond it is another portal. Our heroes venture through.

They’re deposited back in the ziggurat proper. Dal leads them towards the Infinity. However, it is devoured by the Loom before their eyes. They flee outside and find themselves surrounded. Wes is out of ideas. But they spot Voyager in the sky.

On Voyager’s bridge, Janeway declares, “Stay away from my crew.” She fires the ship’s phasers at the Loom. This may not destroy them, but it distracts them. They abandon their attack on the cadets and Wes, heading toward Voyager instead. Janeway orders the attack to continue. But the Loom penetrate the bridge and eradicate several crewmembers. The Loom is attacking the ship, and The Doctor can only create stabilizers so fast. He attempts to fend off the Loom with a hypospray. However, when his mobile emitter is knocked off, he’s returned to a holodeck.

Loom vs. VOY

Meanwhile, the other two members of Nova Squadron arrive in the hangar and find Noum hiding behind a crate. He tells them that survival can be a priority. But then the Loom reaches the hanger. Noum gets between the Loom and the cadets. But in the shuttle behind him, Janeway has matched the weapons to the Loom’s phase variance. She takes one of them out. One of the Loom pursues Janeway’s shuttlecraft as she dives towards the planet. She fires quantum torpedoes at it. It attacks her shuttlecraft, which crashes into the ziggurat.

Aboard Voyager, Tysess attempts to contact Janeway to inform her that her actions have caused the Loom to retreat. Meanwhile, Janeway extracts herself from the shuttle wreckage, observing it “used to be a lot easier.” Inside the ziggurat, Wesley instructs the six cadets to get inside a machine that will help guide them to the path that will ensure the best possible future comes to pass.

Gwyn steps in first, followed by the rest of the cadets, save Maj’el. Wes tells them not to look into the stream lest they see their own future. The machine is activated. Gwyn opens one eye. He sees himself speaking to Gwyn. He says, “I made a mistake, Gwyn. That chair never belonged to me.”

However, the machine doesn’t reveal the path properly. Wes wonders what variable he failed to consider. Gwyn notes Dal’s change in demeanor. She deduces he looked in the stream. Dal says he saw a future he doesn’t want. Maj’el comforts Zero with a Vulcan proverb. This makes Wes realize it isn’t six cadets; it’s seven. Maj’el must stay with the group, too.

Thinking With Portals

The machine opens a portal. Wes tells them they all must go through it. But that’s when the vault door opens. Fortunately, Janeway comes through. She and Wes recognize each other. Then, Janeway realizes Wes was the ghost that lured them to the ziggurat. However, the Loom are still approaching. Janeway says they must evacuate. But Wes repeats that the only path to a happy future is if the seven cadets go through the portal.

Janeway says whatever Wes thinks is happening, she has a duty to protect her crew. But Wes says it isn’t their call to make. Wes promises to keep the Loom at bay, but they must go through the portal to find Chakotay (Robert Beltran) and save the universe. Janeway tells them to go, as she trusts them. The seven cadets enter the portal, and it closes behind them.

Wes says, “Good luck and goodbye” to Janeway. He opens a portal beneath her, and she returns to the Voyager bridge (in full uniform, no less). Meanwhile, the Loom have entered the chamber. Wes uses a psychic attack to engulf the planet in energy. When the wave has vanished, so has the planet. A full multi-spectral scan by Voyager reveals they are gone without a trace. Janeway wonders where.

Elsewhere, the cadets wake up on a red sand island amid a sea of clouds at sunset. Dal spots the Protostar nearby. And sitting atop the saucer is Chakotay.
