Writer Michael Chabon is quite simply a literary genius. His much loved award-winning and best selling novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay is one of the most remarkable books ever written. The historical fiction novel weaves Jewish Mysticism, World War 2, superheroes and the comics industry together to bring one the most remarkable reading experiences I’ve ever had. The Yiddish Policemen’s Union is another favorite of mine.
But we’re here to talk about Star Trek! Moreover, we’re here to talk about Star Trek: Picard. We already knew that Chabon had been working on the show which has Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard. We also knew that he had written two episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks. Today it was announced that Michael Chabon, a life-long Star Trek fan, has been named showrunner of the new Picard series. He’s now at the helm, pun intended.
Alex Kurtzman, who is handling the Star Trek franchise on CBS All Access had this to say about Chabon. “Daring, lyrical, humane, whimsical, celebrated: words that describe both Jean-Luc Picard and the literary genius of Michael Chabon. Despite a laundry list of accomplishments most writers only dream of, Michael shines with the heart and soul of a Trekkie who’s finally found his dream job. We’re so fortunate to have him at the helm as we explore this next chapter in the great captain’s life.”
“A Trekkie who’s finally found his dream job.” Wow. Mr. Chabon, I tip my Vulcan ears to you, sir.
Chabon had this to say, “Star Trek has been an important part of my way of thinking about the world, the future, human nature, storytelling and myself since I was ten years old. I come to work every day in a state of joy and awe at having been entrusted with the character and the world of Jean-Luc Picard, with this vibrant strand of the rich, intricate and complex tapestry that is Trek.”
We are incredibly excited at this news and this show cannot come soon enough!
