April 5, 2063, is First Contact Day, the day Zefram Cochrane (James Cromwell) launches the first warp-capable rocket and is contacted by the Vulcans. Though that day is still decades in the future, Star Trek fans everywhere celebrate the day our technology brings us to the attention of our fellow space faring galactic neighbors. Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access) celebrated this year with virtual panels and additional streamed content. During the event, the first teaser trailer for season two of Star Trek: Picard was released and it revealed some exciting news.
The true final frontier is time…
The teaser trailer for the second season of Star Trek: Picard opens with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) speaking of time. As his voice flows, the camera pans over through what appears to be Picard’s study inside Chateau Picard. Mementos and curated pieces blend the old world of the vineyard and the history of Earth with the life Picard led out in space. Among the tables are books, with Paradise Lost by John Milton getting a close-up, but just beneath it is The Long Dark Tunnel, a Dixon Hill novel. Time pieces take prominence, amplifying Picard’s words about time and its effects on life.

Time offers so many opportunities but never second chances.
The theme for the teaser may be blaringly about time, but the subtly built into the one-minute trailer is masterfully well done. Picard talks of impulsive actions, regrets and missed opportunities while the camera crawls across the room focusing on various objects. In addition to the specifics is the beauty and symmetry in the shot; for instance, a painting of the Enterprise-D with a nebula background first appears to be an exploding ship. It is later juxtaposed by a dusty model of the Stargazer, the ship Picard first commanded. But through it all, something’s not quite right. The room is aglow in that perfect nearing-sunset light, but the sands of time are not falling in the hourglass …
The trial never ends
In the ordered and carefully laid out space, there is one card face-up on a game table. The queen of hearts begins to disintegrate as the camera gets closer. The card turns to sand and flows upward and away, just like the hourglass’ sand. A new voice, a familiar foe, now speaks as the only remaining segment of the card begins to glow: “The trial never ends.”
YES! Fan favorite Q (John de Lancie) is returning to Star Trek! The character is most akin to a trickster god and his words harken back to Star Trek: The Next Generation, when Q first appears as the magistrate in a trial over whether or not humanity deserves to exist in the universe. If the trial never ends, what does this portend for the upcoming season?
