Star Trek: Lower Decks delivers a more contained story with Season 4 Episode 8, “Caves.” It’s an absolute delight to have our four Lower Deckers together again. It’s evidence that this series is at its strongest when the main quartet is at the narrative’s center.
I thoroughly enjoyed each side story (and would love to see them expanded in future episodes). While Lower Decks‘ quick-witted zaniness is still present (it’s baked in the show’s DNA), “Caves” nurtures Boimler, Mariner, Tendi and Rutherford’s bond. It reminds us of just how crucial it is to this series.
I’ve compiled a list of my favorite quotes from “Caves” to celebrate our favorite Beta Shifters and Rutherford’s foray into fatherhood. (That was for the Tendiford shippers. I know it.) Cerritos Strong!

BOIMLER: “Please let us go! I thought you were just a paranoid anxiety made up by people who needed an imagined enemy to simulate order on unrelated disasters so life doesn’t feel so random and chaotic!”
VENDORIAN: “Ha! That is what we wanted you to think.”
Joke’s on Boims (Jack Quaid) because the Vendorians had him fooled. They pulled the wool over his eyes. The Vendorians control everything around us; they’re not a “paranoid anxiety.” Does that mean I can blame them when it all goes pear-shaped in my life? Why take responsibility for my actions or chalk it up to the universe when I can lay blame on a fictional alien race?
LEVY: “They’re gonna tie us together, face-to-face, and lay brood pods on our necks so we have to look at each other in the eye while their young bursts out of our chests.”
Levy (Fred Tatasciore) would 100 percent be a fan of the dark web. I can also picture him in QAnon. He’s a conspiracy theory junkie, at the least. Despite that, without Levy’s in-depth knowledge of Vendorian customs, he and Boimler might not have survived or passed their morality test. You have to give Levy that. Side note: the above sounds like a horrible way to die.

ASIF: “Wait, my leg!”
MARINER: “I’m done being old, so we’re just gonna have the doc grow you a new one.”
I included this quote not solely because it’s funny within the context of the episode but because it’s hilarious (and head-scratching) out of context, too. What if you introduced someone to Lower Decks via this quote? Imagine their abject confusion. Imagine. Mariner (Tawny Newsome) doesn’t have time to be old, Asif (Asif Ali). Sorry, dude.
TENDI: “I’m glad you guys are my friends.”
Tendi (Noël Wells) is the epitome of adorableness. She’s so sweet that I want to reach through my screen and give her a bear hug. This quote isn’t funny or thought-provoking, but I find it poignant in that it marks the moment when our Lower Deckers became family. That happens when you’re trapped in an elevator for hours after a few drinks.
RUTHERFORD: “I think that was the best time I’ve ever had being stuck in something.”
This begs the question: What else has Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) been stuck in? Perhaps we need an episode featuring Rutherford and his getting stuck in various “somethings.” Maybe a few Jefferies Tubes?
