Star Trek: Lower Decks concludes a stellar season with Season 4 Episode 10, “Old Friends, New Planets.” Not only do we connect Mariner to Star Trek: The Next Generation, but the outing resolves the season’s overarching narrative regarding the mystery vessel. All in all, Season 4 is the strongest for me, from the fun Easter eggs and homages to the beautiful character development, biting humor and the T’Lyn of it all. (More T’Lyn in Season 5, please, and thank you.)
“Old Friends, New Planets” is as high-octane and action-packed as it is poignant and heartbreaking. The creatives strike that perfect balance between comedy and drama. Each of our Lower Decks ladies gets to shine like the badasses they are. Tendi leaving for Orion tore my heart asunder. My Tendiford spirit, in particular, is crushed. However, I’ve no doubt she’ll return to her Cerritos family in Season 5.
I’ve compiled a list of my favorite quotes from “Old Friends, New Planets” to celebrate our favorite Beta Shifters, science besties and Acting Captain Bradward Boimler. Cerritos Strong!
RUTHERFORD: “He looks like Tom Paris.”
BOIMLER: “I don’t see it.”
Well, in Boimler’s (Jack Quaid) defense … has anyone ever seen Tom Paris and Nick Locarno in the same room? Rutherford’s (Eugene Cordero) remark is right on the money, and I love that Star Trek can poke fun at itself here.
T’LYN: “Clearly, his emotional behavior conflicts with his culpability.”
DR. T’ANA: “Yeah, he’s an asshole.”
There’s nothing like pairing T’Lyn’s (Gabrielle Ruiz) Vulcan logic with Dr. T’Ana’s (Gillian Vigman) Caitian candor. It’s such a fun bit. T’Ana’s simple description is all we need. Locarno’s an a-hole.

DR. MIGLEEMO: “Please, Madam, perhaps we could settle this over a delicious bowl of slime.”
Never come between Dr. Migleemo (Paul F. Tompkins) and his delicious bowl of slime. Really, is there anything a bowl of slime can’t do? It might be the answer to world peace. At the very least, it’s Migleemo’s answer to not getting the snot kicked out of him by an Orion.
ADMIRAL VASSERY: “Who the hell are you?”
BOIMLER: “Acting Captain Bradward Boimler, sir.”
Admittedly, this moment made me emotional. It was incredibly well-earned for Boims. Excuse me, Admiral Vassery (Fred Tatasciore — who deserves all the flowers for the sheer number of characters he voices.), that’s Acting Captain Bradward Boimler you’re speaking to. And he’s here to bring his friend home. I hope this means we’ll see Boimler get another promotion soon.
MARINER: “Don’t let that anger define your life.”
This is a compelling statement coming from Mariner (Tawny Newsome), who’s spent much of her adult life in Starfleet operating from a place of anger. Her growth is easily one of the most well-constructed, methodically cultivated aspects of Star Trek: Lower Decks. She’s come a long way from Season 1. That’s my girl.

MARINER: “I might even try not self-sabotaging for once. I’ll see how that goes.”
BOIMLER: “That sounds remarkably healthy.”
Here’s more evidence that Mariner’s growth is significant. Here, she acknowledges her penchant for self-sabotage, explaining why she’s been promoted and subsequently demoted several times. However, having a mentor like Commander Ransom and a strong inner circle of friends who believe in her, Mariner is slowly but surely working through her trauma. Who knows? Maybe she’ll captain her own crew one day.
T’LYN: “Instead, I prefer to focus my time on becoming your science bestie.”
I love this full-circle moment. In the season premiere, Tendi expresses her desire for T’Lyn to become her science bestie. Now, in the season finale, T’Lyn reveals she’d rather make that a reality instead of returning to Vulcan Command. Is anyone cutting onions here?
