“Lower Decks! Lower Decks! Lower Decks!”
Star Trek: Lower Decks is back to fill the zany, frenetic and animated Star Trek-shaped void in our lives. The double-episode Season 4 premiere, “Twovix” and “I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee,” are consistently hilarious, action-packed installments. They lay a solid foundation for what’s sure to be the show’s strongest season yet. Plus, our Beta Shifters have been promoted, and there’s a new mysterious threat to the universe.
“Twovix” is a delightful homage to all things Star Trek: Voyager, packed with Easter eggs galore. “I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee” is a lighthearted entry with an adorably terrifying creature. I need a Moopsy that doesn’t slurp bones, though.
I’ve compiled a list of my favorite quotes from both episodes to celebrate the return of our favorite California-class crew. Energize!

Twovix
RANSOM: “As long as nothing goes sideways today, you’ll be a lieutenant junior grade.”
BOIMLER: “But stuff always goes sideways!”
Listen, I’m with Boimler (Jack Quaid) here. This is Star Trek: Lower Decks. Sh*t always goes sideways. There’s a healthy mix of bedlam, shenanigans, antics and unadulterated mayhem. Boimler (and Mariner) is usually behind it. That said, I appreciate Ransom’s (Jerry O’Connell) optimism here. Perhaps one day, things will go right. Hey, that could be a fun episode — the crew experiences months of calm and quiet, and it drives them over the edge. Pay me to write it, Paramount.

T’ILLUPS: “‘Organism’? I’m a totally unique sentient being. Plus, I’m cool as f*ck. We’re gonna be best friends fast.”
Admittedly, I would’ve loved more time with T’illups (Paul Scheer), the amalgam of Billups and Dr. T’Ana (Gillian Vigman). He’s cool as f*ck. He’s a fun fusion of Billups and T’Ana’s personalities. T’illups cracked me up in “Twovix.” Imagine the hijinks this dude would’ve gotten into.
MARINER: “You adorable idiot. I’m the one who told Ransom to promote you.”
BOIMLER: “You did?”
MARINER: “Yes! I was just keeping my mouth shut so it would be a surprise. … This is why we can’t keep secrets. One of us always ends up covered in slime.”
My Boimy is an adorable idiot. I adore Boimler and Mariner’s (Tawny Newsome) friendship. It’s the beating heart of this kooky show. I’m also glad it’s stayed in the friendship territory — it’s too precious to tarnish with romance. Anyway, Mariner is always so supportive of Boimler, even if he doesn’t consistently reciprocate that (ahem, Starbase 80). Mariner might use various methods to sabotage her chances at a promotion, but she knows when a pal deserves to move up the ladder.

I Have No Bones Yet I Must Flee
TENDI: “We spent so much time hanging out, staying up late, ranking captains by cuteness, swapping bodies because of those cosmic rays…”
RUTHERFORD: “We learned too much about each other that day.”
Tendi (Noël Wells) has my heart. She’s perpetual sunshine in Orion form. Positivity seeps out of her pores. I love how she reminisces here about the Beta Shift’s time in lower decks. On that note, I’d also love to watch an episode with our quartet staying up all night and what they get up to. We need that “captain cuteness ranking” list. Why does Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) say they learned too much about each other that day? Give us some context, Lower Decks.

BOIMLER: “I’m even gonna miss the dent I made from all the times I slammed my head on the ceiling during a red alert. Goodbye, Denty.”
Ah, Denty. He’s the main character; we all didn’t know it until now. Boimler incessantly walks around at least slightly concussed. He should probably see Dr. T’Ana about that. Anyway, I hope Denty 1 doesn’t find out that Boimler is cheating on him with Denty 2.

MARINER: “When I get demoted, it’ll be because I earned it.”
Nobody promotes Mariner and gets away with it, especially Jack Ransom. Of course, we know Mariner has been promoted and subsequently demoted multiple times throughout her Starfleet career. Ransom has taken on the challenge of ensuring Mariner sticks it out. He refuses to fall for her tricks. Who knew the commander had it in him? This line made me chuckle. I love the idea of Mariner taking pride in earning a demotion. She’s a bastion of chaos, and that’s why I love her.
RUTHERFORD: “Wait, I can just ask for stuff I deserve?”
Rutherford’s genuine surprise here made me giggle. It’s also painful in that I wish it were that simple. It should be that simple. However, it’s not easy to ask for what you deserve if you’re anybody but a straight white man, but I digress. Thankfully, Tendi asks for Rutherford’s promotion on his behalf, and Billups gives it to him. Now, our core quartet is in the lieutenant junior grade camp together. As they should be.
