On Saturday, April 9, 2022, the first teaser for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 arrived, and the stakes have never been higher as Ensigns Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Samathan Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) must spring the USS Cerritos from spacedock!

As expected, the conflict propelling the teaser follows-up on the cliffhanger from the Star Trek: Lower Decks second season finale, “First First Contact.” In that episode, the crew of the Cerritos watch with shock and heartbreak as Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) is arrested for allegedly detonating a Varuvian bomb on the surface of Pakled Planet, the homeworld of the brutish Pakleds.

To add insult to injury, Freeman is due for a promotion, which she declines to remain alongside her loyal crew onboard our beloved California-class vessel. And just when we were getting to know the rest of Freeman’s bridge crew a little better, too.

Speaking of the Cerritos, the ship is the only character to appear onscreen in the teaser, which does feature new voiceover dialogue from all four of our heroic Lower Deckers. In the midst of repairs necessitated by the events of “First First Contact,” we see the ship in spacedock, calling to mind Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

However, when the dialogue turns to talk of stealing the Cerritos out of spacedock, we warp directly into Star Trek III: The Search for Spock territory. Hey, stealing the Cerritos from spacedock went great in that simulation cooked up by Shari yn Yem (Lennon Parham) in the Season 2 episode “I, Excretus,” right? This should be a breeze.
