Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Bradward Bimler (Jack Quaid) must escape from planet Earth in the Lower Decks season 3 premiere.

The season finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds aired on Paramount Plus this week and with it came the fiftieth episode of the Wil Wheaton-hosted The Ready Room. The after-show featured interviews with Spock actor Ethan Peck and showrunner, Executive Producer, and “A Quality of Mercy” co-writer Henry Alonso Myers. Plus, we got a look at a clip from the upcoming third-season premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks!

Bradward (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) at the Boimler family raisin vineyard in Modesto, California.

Boimler Vineyard

The clip opens on a vineyard that immediately calls to mind the opening scenes of both Star Trek: Picard seasons one and two. But we soon learn that Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid) doesn’t come from a long line of winemakers. Instead, he comes from a tradition of raisin-driers.

As the clip continues, Boimler is briefed by his best friend and fellow Earth-grounded ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome). Mariner laments that her mother Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) is being railroaded by a conservative military court. She cites the events of the second season finale, “First First Contact.” Apparently, the debris field in the Laaperian System erased the exonerating evidence in the ship logs.

This causes Boimler to realize he has that same information recorded in his logs (even in the 23rd century, there will be recappers). Now it’s just a matter of figuring out which one of “like a bajillion” dry docks the Cerritos is in. Next, our heroes must retrieve Bradward’s PADDs. As the clip ends, Mariner and Boimler realize Ensign Samanthan Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) could be the key!

Lower Decks Season 3

While we have been promised that Lower Decks will be returning this summer, we still don’t have an exact release date for the animated series. Furthermore, we’re coming up on the first Thursday since the beginning of Star Trek: Discovery season four in November 2021 that we won’t have a new episode of Trek.

However, the second season Blu-Ray and DVD set will be arriving on Tuesday, July 12, 2022. At least we have one concrete date to mark in our logs. Just give us an official release date soon, for Kirk’s sake!
