During February 15th’s Paramount Investors Day Presentation, J.J. Abrams announced that Paramount is planning to enter negotiations for the fourth installment of Kelvin timeline Star Trek films starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg, according to a report in Variety.
“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” Abrams said. “We’re thrilled about this film; we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so we can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.”

In Abram’s 2009’s Star Trek, which first introduced the Kelvin timeline or “alternate universe Trek,” the director reset the world not to contradict all of the Trek canon that came before. Six new actors stepped into the iconic roles of Captain Kirk, Science Officer “Mr.” Spock, Commander Sulu, Lieutenant Uhura, Dr. Leonard H. “Bones” McCoy and Engineering Officer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. After the first film, the actors returned for two more films set in the Kelvin timeline, 2013’s Star Trek: Into Darkness, also directed by Abrams, and 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond, directed by Justin Lin.
Paramount almost reunited the cast in 2018 for a sequel to reunite Kirk with his father, who once again would have been played by Chris Hemsworth. Unfortunately, the film never materialized at Paramount because the script was underwhelming, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe star later revealed. However, rumors have been circling since 2021 that the actor is open to reuniting with one of Hollywood’s best Chris’s if Star Trek 4 ever comes to fruition.
Abrams is producing the as-yet-untitled project through Bad Robot, with WandaVision’s Matt Shakman directing the film based on a screenplay by Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires. They adapted the final version from a draft penned by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
