Appearing on the panel were Executive Producer Michelle Paradise and cast members Sonequa Martin-Green (Burnham), Blu del Barrio (Adira), David Ajala (Book), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Culber), Mary Wiseman (Tilly), and Anthony Rapp, (Stamets). The panel was moderated by Karama Home. Martin-Green threw it to the trailer within minutes and it was so good they had to play it twice. There were many jaw-dropping moments packed in the two-minute clip including a Ferengi!
Countless lives are at stake.
At the end of season three, Discovery was still in the future and we had Burnham sitting in the Captain’s chair for the first time and announcing her new signature “Engage” command that every Starfleet captain has. For Burnham, it’s “Let’s Fly.” In the trailer, we see that Burnham doesn’t get any time to savor her new rank. Along with some colorful new uniforms, there’s a new threat, and it’s coming to destroy the galaxy.
Life is just a blink. It is one heartbeat in the entire lifespan of the universe.
The threat is a planet-killing anomaly and it’s tearing through the galaxy bringing together a Federation that’s still trying to reunify after suffering a debilitating dilithium shortage. We see Burnham at a council meeting with other races, including Vulcan, Orian and Ferengi. Yes, Ferengi! We see the meeting react to a horrifying holographic projection of the anomaly at work. The leader of this meeting impresses that, Federation and non-Federation members alike, “will meet this threat to our shared galaxy.” She doesn’t seem to be Burnham’s biggest fan though, telling her that, “There is a very fine line between a pendulum and a wrecking ball.” But we know that won’t slow Burnham and, as evident in this trailer, she will not heed a warning and goes straight into danger. Then we see some incredible action sequences and special effects.
We can’t let fear define us in this moment.
During the NYCC panel, a lot was said about how filming during the pandemic, where there was much uncertainty on one hand, but hope on the other, is mirrored in this new season. These themes of uncertainty and hope were definitely evident in the new trailer as was the theme of this crew, with Captain Burnham in her new role as leader, becoming a stronger family.
Star Trek: Discovery premiere November 18th on Paramount Plus.
Season four of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY finds Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery facing a threat unlike any they’ve ever encountered. With Federation and non-Federation worlds alike feeling the impact, they must confront the unknown and work together to ensure a hopeful future for all.
