Star Trek: Discovery is beaming up for its final go-round, and it’s a bittersweet one. I’m excited to have a Star Trek series on the air, but I’m sad that this is the end of an era. Discovery marked a new chapter for the franchise as the first streaming series. Now, she’s taking us into the final frontier for one last high-octane, thrilling adventure.
I loved the Burnham/Saru scenes. To me, they’re the beating heart of this series. I’m glad my boy Saru is getting the life he deserves — a loving partner and a new job on the horizon.
Below, I’ve compiled my favorite quotes from the Season 5 double-episode premiere, “Red Directive” and “Under the Twin Moons.” Energize!

Tron Burnham
BURNHAM: “I would rather not die out here. I’ve got a saxophone lesson to get to.”
In “Red Directive,” Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) goes all Tron to track two wanted criminals who stole a Romulan puzzle box. Here, she reminds us that she has a rich personal life outside the, you know, “saving the universe countless times” stuff. I love wisecracking Burnham. May we see more of her in Season 5.
Side note: Burnham doesn’t strike me as a saxophonist, but I’m down with it (although she strikes me as a flutist — like me). Maybe she has a Duke Silver-esque alter ego where she hits up jazz clubs and serenades the masses.
TILLY: “It’s warm in here, isn’t it? You’re not here, but it is warm—just take my word for that.”
BURNHAM: “You had the Andorian champagne?”
Tilly (Mary Wiseman) is like me — I take two sips of anything remotely alcoholic, and I’m good for the night. Slightly inebriated Tilly is adorable. Also, that dude is totally into her, and they would look cute together. He gets my stamp of approval as long as he respects our Tilly.

Raynus Interruptus
RAYNER: “I love the feeling of interrupting something.”
You know what? I’m digging Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). He’s a lovable curmudgeon. Despite being Burnham’s new Number One and her knowing his demeanor, I predict they’ll butt head quite a bit this season. Anyway, Rayner plays the third wheel to Burnham and Book (David Ajala) in “Red Directive.” Something tells me he gets a kick from interrupting two former lovers who still dig each other.
BOOK: “Reminds me of someone — trying to put my finger on who.”
BURNHAM: “You know I’m holding a phaser, right?”
Get a room, you two. You can cut that sexual tension with a rusty butter knife. It’s cute, though. I hope Burnham would only stun Book with that phaser.

Saru the Dad Joker
BURNHAM: “I’d hate to miss your wedding because I’m dead.”
SARU: “That would be a grave disappointment.”
BURNHAM: “Did you just make a pun?”
Saru (Doug Jones) is in his “dad joke” era. He must have received pointers from my dad. Anyway, I love this side of him. Give me pun-dispensing Saru any day of the week.
BURNHAM: “Tilly, we’re losing our foot!”
TLLY: “What? Oh my God, who lost a foot?”
BURNHAM: “No, not our actual feet, the foot we’re hiding under.”
Poor Tilly. She thought Burnham was being literal about losing limbs. Of course, if you didn’t have the context from “Under the Twin Moons,” the first line makes it sound like Burnham and Saru share a foot. I wanted to see how many statue body parts they could’ve used for shelter.
