A press release disseminated on Thursday, March 2, 2023, announced that Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 will conclude the groundbreaking show’s Galaxy-class run. According to the release, the upcoming final season will be released on Paramount Plus in early 2024.

The series that relaunched the Star Trek franchise debuted with a CBS broadcast premiere on September 24, 2017. Afterward, the series premiere and second episode were available for streaming on the now-defunct CBS All Access. Discovery subsequently became a Paramount Plus streaming series.

Discovery‘s upcoming fifth season will follow Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the Discovery on a mission to locate “an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries.” However, the Discovery crew aren’t the only ones hunting for the same quarry.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 will also feature returning stars Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), and Blu del Barrio (Adira). New additions to the cast include Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner), Elias Toufexis (L’ak) and Eve Harlow (Malinne Ravel). The season will be executive produced by co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise.

Since Discovery debuted as the first in a new generation of Star Trek shows, the Franchise has expanded to five ongoing series. One of the others, Star Trek: Picard, will be the first to conclude. New episodes of the (reportedly) final season of Picard are currently being released for streaming Thursdays on Paramount Plus.

One of the other three ongoing Trek shows is a direct spinoff of Discovery. Before Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was released in 2022, several key cast members were introduced in Discovery Season 2. The remaining two are the animated shows Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.

The press release promises the year leading up to Discovery Season 5 will be marked with “celebrations and appearances at key events.” While the show’s conclusion may be bittersweet, all good things must end.

However, there’s no telling whether or not other characters introduced in the series might return elsewhere. One example is the still-rumored Section 31 spinoff starring Discovery‘s Michelle Yeoh (Philippa Georgiou).

Seasons one through four of Star Trek: Discovery are currently available for streaming on Paramount Plus.
