Star Trek: Discovery takes us to Trill this week, where our crew searches for the next clue in the puzzle that’ll lead them to the Progenitor tech. “Jinaal” is somewhat all over the place and stumbles under the weight of too many plot threads, but there are things to love about it. The Rayner/Tilly scenes are a blast, and the final moments set up what’ll surely be a fun storyline for Adira and the crew. Moll and L’ak certainly won’t make this chase easy…
Below, I’ve compiled my favorite quotes from Season 5, Episode 3, “Jinaal.” Energize!

Make a Choice
BURNHAM: “Connection isn’t a skill; it’s a choice.”
Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is no stranger to profound, thought-provoking statements. She’s dispensed quite a few words of wisdom in her day. I’ve always thought of connection as an art form—a skill you hone. If you’re a social butterfly, connection is easier for you. However, this quote makes sense to me. We choose to connect with those around us.
CULBER: “‘Emotionally overwhelming’ is what I do best.”
This Culber (Wilson Cruz) quote made me simultaneously giggle and wince because of its painful relatability. Well, I suppose I’m more “emotionally overwhelmed.” I’m usually not doing the “overwhelming.”

SARU: “I reviewed the draft, and there is one phrase which I believe may warrant reconsideration. ‘The handsome and erudite Captain Saru.'”
T’RINA: “If it is embarrassing you, we will remove it, but it is accurate to say that you are both.”
Aw, Saru (Doug Jones) and T’Rina (Tara Rosling) are cutie patooties. Their relationship is so sweet. I think “handsome” and “erudite” are great descriptors for our Saru. I’m glad they kept that in their wedding invitations.
Count to 20
TILLY: “Here are my 20 words. You’re on a new ship, fresh off a demotion, trying to hide how hard that is by being a giant… Oh, that’s 20 words, so…”
The Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) scenes are solid gold. They’re easily the best scenes in the episode. Wiseman boasts excellent comedic timing, and she gets to use it for this quote. Hmm … I wonder what the word after “giant” would’ve been.

JINAAL: “I believe you’d call that a red herring. Never understood that. Herrings aren’t even red.”
BURNHAM: “I think that’s the point.”
Well, how would you react if you saw a herring that was red? You’d be so distracted by it that you’d miss all the more important stuff happening around you. It seems Jinaal isn’t big on literary devices.
T’RINA: “Conflict is a natural part of any relationship and not to be feared.”
Nobody knows logic and wisdom like a Vulcan. I’m very conflict-averse and quite passive, but I’m slowly (and surely) understanding that conflict doesn’t have to mean “aggression.” It’s a challenging lesson to learn.
