I will have to say I am completely surprised that I didn’t know that there was an upcoming reboot of the Saw franchise and that the Chris Rock is the executive producer on the project. The rock I am living under must have kept this news out. But I was extremely excited when I opened Twitter today and found that this was trending! The new film is titled Spiral: From The Book of Saw and stars Chris Rock, Max Minghella, and Samuel L. Jackson.
The trailer starts off slow, almost hiding the fact that this is another Saw film. Shortly in, a call comes over the radio requesting all units that are available. This is where things get chilling, flashing between different crime scenes that all point to one thing, the game is back. Favorite line from the entire trailer? Of course it comes from Jackson who is calling out whomever is behind this. True Jackson style. We also get to see some gruesome callbacks to the original movies including what looks to be a reverse bear trap and arm trap as well as Rock finding himself cuffed to a pipe with only a hacksaw to help him.
Sprial: From The Book of Saw sees the return of franchise director Darren Lynn Bousman. The script for the film was written by Jigsaw writers Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger. The real kicker is this, is the entire story comes straight from Rock himself. I am excited to see where this new chapter takes us, since the main mastermind is technically dead within the franchise. But that means nothing in the horror genre so.
The official description from Lionsgate is as follows: A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the centre of the killer’s morbid game.
Spiral: From The Book of Saw is set to release in theaters on May 15, 2020.
