Last January, we reported that the prolific J. Michael Straczynski would be adapting author Kim Stanley Robinson’s award-winning science fiction trilogy: Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars for Spike TV. It’s now December and Spike has announced a straight-to-series order of the science fiction classic. The network approved 10 episodes with a premiere set for January 2017.

The series will be called Red Mars and it follows the first settlers charged with terraforming a mysterious planet, all of whom have competed to be a part of the mission. Red Mars delves into the lives of these relative strangers, cut off from everything they’ve ever known and living in the harshest environment imaginable. Over time, viewers will witness the mind-blowing evolution of humans and technology as they learn to adapt in their inhospitable new home.

“The heart and soul of Red Mars is about humanity,” said Spike’s exec vp original series Sharon Levy. “This group of strangers must find a way to live together and survive under the most daunting conditions mankind has ever faced to become the first living generation of Martians. They will be each other’s greatest source of strength and — if they can’t coexist — the greatest reason for failure.”

Straczynski is no stranger to television or film. His most recent projects were co-writing Thor, World War Z and the hit Netflix series, Sense8. But, to many nerds, we hail Straczynski as the creator and writer of the science fiction television series Babylon 5. (btw, you should check out his IMDB resume, did you know he wrote for He-Man and She-Ra?) B-5 is a great example of grand science fiction television and it’s very exciting that Stracynski will be working on Robinson’s epic tale.
