Jake Gyllenhaal may be joining the Marvel bandwagon.  He is apparently in talks to join the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 as classic villain, Mysterio.  The Hollywood Reporter published the news on Monday morning.

Mysterio (Quinten Beck) has been a part of the Marvel universe since Stan Lee and Steve Ditko brought him to life on the pages of Spider-Man comics in 1964.  He’s a special effects expert who uses illusion to fight Spider-Man and commit crimes against the innocent citizens of New York City.

Gyllenhaal was recently rumored to be considered to replace Ben Affleck as Batman if Affleck were to step down.  That doesn’t look to be happening, as Affleck has signaled that he wants to stay.  And, there were related rumors that Gyllenhaal flat out turned down that role anyway.  Take that, DC.

The role of Mysterio is likely a better fit for Gyllenhaal.  He’s weird, he’s good at bad guys and tends to play pretty demonstrative characters. He should be an interesting foil to Tom Holland’s infectious naive enthusiasm.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is set to swing into theaters on July 5, 2019.
