Bungie is giving us an end of year treat, the return of Sparrow Racing in a limited time Holiday event, The Dawning.
Destiny recently entered into its third year and fourth expansion. The base game released in September 2014, with the first DLC, The Dark Below, released December of the same year. House of Wolves followed in May of 2015, with The Taken King in September, marking both the start of the second year and the attempt to course correct the game. Unfortunately, the lack of regular content updates saw the game shed players with some coming back for the release of the Rise of Iron expansion.
Rise of Iron released in September 2016 and, while there have been hiccups, there has also been enough to keep people busy. The Dawning is just another example of Bungie making good on their promise to provide steady content updates. The holiday will include two new Exotics, ornaments, new Gear Sets that will only be obtainable from present boxes, revamped strikes, and, the most important, the return of Sparrow Racing.
Like with all events within Destiny, and most seasonal events within other games, The Dawning is an event that is not celebrating any real world holidays. Instead, they are holidays routed firmly within the game’s lore and just happen to be celebrated around the same time as the real world counterparts. Because of this, all similarities to actual holidays and celebrations are merely coincidence as everything portrayed is fiction.
While I’m excited to see the return of the Icebreaker, the real story is the return of Sparrow Racing. It’s been a year since we last were able to test our speed and coordination against some spectacular tracks and we have less than a week to see how the system has been overhauled. Like last year, players will get a record book that they can work to complete for bragging rights and rewards. Unlike last time, gear received through racing may be useful for things other than SRL. The original tracks will be joined by two new ones on Earth and Venus and there will be new gear as well as Sparrows to win.
Strike Scoring will also be a component to the record book. The premise of Strike Scoring seems simple, it’s pure bragging rights but, completing objectives will put you on the path for new Exotics. Zavala will also have quests and bounties related to Strike Scoring.
In addition, I’m sure there will be new shaders and quests to keep people busy for the three weeks. If nothing else, logging in to view The Tower and other decorated zones resplendent in wintry wonder will be worth it.
The Dawning will launch on December 13 and will run for three weeks, ending on January 3. Sparrow Racing League will once more disappear except for custom matches between friends.
