Highlights

  • Sony held their 2024 “State of Play” event, a 40-minute broadcast unveiling some of their plans for the year, on January 23.
  • The broadcast confirmed that Silent Hill 2 and Until Dawn would both have remakes released during the year.
  • In total, 17 games were featured at Sony’s State of Play.

Thousands of avid PlayStation lovers tuned in on Wednesday, January 31, to hear what Sony had in store for them this year. Sony delivered — at least in quantity — at their first State of Play event for 2024. In total, 17 games were featured at the event, which ran for 40 minutes, with a range of games announced. It had something for anime lovers (Stellar Blade and Zenless Zone Hero) and classic game fans (Sonic x Shadow Generations).

Most notable, however, were the announcements of remakes. Horror game fanatics will want to pick up their PlayStation controllers this year to play Until Dawn Remastered and Silent Hill 2 Remake. Read the best takeaways from Sony’s State of Play in January 2024 below.

Anticipated New Games for 2024 and Beyond

Helldivers II is one of the first games to be released in 2024. It is expected to hit PlayStations and PCs on February 8. Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, the game is a four-player action multiplayer and a sequel to its 2015 precursor. Become peacemakers taking on a galactic war in Helldivers II.

Several minutes were devoted to the trailer for Stellar Blade, an anime-style game set for release on April 26. Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, an alien race has forced humans to flee off-planet, and the players will try to take it back. Gamers will play as Eve, who travels across the planet to take down the aliens. She will encounter more than these monsters, make companions, and explore an underground city of survivors.

The game is developed by Shift Up, a South Korean game developer.

“This is the game we’ve been dreaming about for years,” Shift Up CEO and Founder Kim Hung Tae said.

Rise of the Rōnin was another game heavily focused on at the event. The role-playing game takes players to war-torn 19th-century Japan and is open world, promising hours of gameplay for fans. It will be a PlayStation exclusive and is created by Team NINJA. The release is set for March 22.

Highly Anticipated Sequels and Remakes Steal the Show

Several new games were revealed in the State of Play, but the remakes and sequels drew the most attention and praise online. Viewers got a glimpse into the Silent Hill 2 remake, originally released in 2001. Though no release for the remake was announced, it is the first update from developer Konami since 2022.  The preview shows the combat element of the game, which has similar elements to The Last of Us.

“Konami is proud to present our vision of contemporary psychological horror and we hope you all will enjoy it,” Silent Hill series producer Motoi Okamoto said.

The company also unveiled a new game in the franchise, Silent Hill: The Silent Message. Notably, it will be free for PlayStation 5 users and is available today. It shows a much more psychologically terrifying, first-person game.

Until Dawn

Until Dawn, a 2015 butterfly effect-style horror game, is also set to be remastered, with an expected release in 2025. Most of the trailer provided cinematic shots familiar to players of the original game and some footage. It will be available on both PlayStation 5 and PC, developed by Ballistic Moon, and raises questions about whether it will align with the live-action film in the works.

Both these remakes were met with excitement from fans, whether on X or through the live chat that ran during the live stream. Joining them was Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, due for release in 2025. A full 10-minute trailer can be found here, showing new characters and hints at the gameplay for the sequel.

“I’m afraid Death Stranding is far from over. Humanity is still in danger. Still on the brink of extinction,” the main character, Sam (played by Norman Reedus), is told.
