Webs are shaking over at Sony and Disney/Marvel today. According to a report from Variety, the MCU Spider-Man films are currently in the balance while the two major studios are in negotiations over financing terms.
Apparently the dispute began as Disney demanded all future Spider-Man films be split 50/50 between the two companies. However, it appears that Sony are comfortable with the current arrangement of Marvel receiving about 5% of first-dollar gross and all merchandising revenues. So they are currently at an impasse. Basically, should a deal not come to pass, Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man will be no more as Marvel would no longer produce the films. While a deal could still be made, things are a little rocky. The two companies have a history of disputes regarding the characters Sony has film rights to.
It would be a real big shame if fans lose Holland’s interpretation only to get yet another actor in the spidey suit. It leaves a bitter taste in the mouth that we could be seeing a fourth actor portray the webslinger due to two companies battling over money. Still, not all hope is gone. We’ll just have to wait with bated breath to see if we’ll be getting more MCU/Sony Spider-Man films.
